The Ministry of Agriculture and Lands,\u00a0 Forestry, and Marine Resources advances in rolling out Component Four of its Food Security\u00a0 Enhancement Project with the importation of 466 purebred animals from the United States of\u00a0 America (USA) at a cost of over four million dollars XCD.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The purchase of the animals, namely sheep, goats, and pigs, came in via the Maurice Bishop\u00a0 International Airport on Saturday, January 4, 2025. This is a part of the implementation of a\u00a0 national breeding program aimed at increasing quality stock on the local market and, ultimately,\u00a0 food security and sustainability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The initiative will offer direct support to 25 pig farmers, who will receive facility upgrades along\u00a0 with 1 breeding boar, and 25 small ruminant farmers (both sheep and goats) will also receive\u00a0 facility upgrades and at least 1 breeding buck or ram.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Minister for Agriculture and Lands Forestry and Marine Resources, Hon. Lennox J. Andrews,\u00a0 speaking at the official ceremony marking the historic moment for the livestock industry, described\u00a0 the arrival of the animals as a moment of glory and achievement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis initiative represents a pivotal moment in advancing the agricultural sector and in ensuring\u00a0 the long-term sustainability of our nation\u2019s food security,\u201d Minister Andrew stated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe importation of live animals goes beyond merely increasing our livestock production; it is an\u00a0 investment in genetic diversity and overall productivity of our livestock sector,\u201d Minister Andrew\u00a0 added.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over three hundred thousand dollars was also invested in upgrading facilities at Laura, St. David,\u00a0 Mirabeau, St. Andrew, and at a third facility at Sauteurs, St. Patrick, for housing the imported\u00a0 animals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, Forestry and Marine\u00a0 Resources, David Hopkin, in his welcome remarks, described the moment as a strategic investment\u00a0 for both the present and the future.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt the national level this step supports our goals on reducing dependence on imports while\u00a0 ensuring a sustainable supply of high-quality protein for our population,\u201d PS Hopkin stated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Minister for Finance, Hon. Dennis Cornwall, whose ministry was instrumental in providing\u00a0 economic support to the Food Security Enhancement Project, congratulated the Ministry of\u00a0 Agriculture and Lands Forestry and Marine Resources for the extensive work in ensuring the\u00a0 realisation of the initiative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the finance minister, the initiative reflects the government\u2019s broader commitment to\u00a0 responsible fiscal management, where every investment is aligned with our national development\u00a0 priorities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs Minister for Finance, I am particularly proud of the role my ministry has played in supporting\u00a0 this transformative project, from securing and managing the 26.8M XCD from the Food Security\u00a0 Enhancement Project to working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands Forestry and\u00a0 Marine Resources on financial planning and resource allocation\u201d, stated minister Cornwall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Finance has been instrumental in turning this vision into a reality\u2026\u201d Minister Cornwall added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Mobilisation, Implementation, and Transformation, Hon.\u00a0 Andy Williams described the importation of the livestock as an occasion of national significance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs the Minister for Mobilisation, Implementation, and Transformation, I am entrusted with\u00a0 ensuring that projects critical to our nation\u2019s development are implemented. This year is indeed a\u00a0 game changer, not just for the agriculture sector but for Grenada as a whole\u2026 And this is the sort\u00a0 of transformation that we look forward to,\u201d he remarked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A team of recently employed livestock officers will now care for the imported livestock stationed\u00a0 at the various quarantine points. They are responsible for all aspects of caregiving, feeding, and ensuring that breeding terms and conditions are met. The animals will be quarantined for a period\u00a0 of six to eight weeks before being distributed to the selected farmers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The historic moment was also witnessed by former Minister for Agriculture and Lands, Forestry,\u00a0 and Marine Resources, Senator Adrian Thomas; Minister for Social Development and Housing,\u00a0 Senator Gloria Thomas; and advisor in the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, Forestry, and\u00a0 Marine Resources, Mrs. Gemma Bain-Thomas, among other dignitaries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
