The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Export Development recently participated in a 3-day series of consultations held at the Radisson Hotel,\u00a0Grenada, which concluded on 16 January 2025.<\/p>\n
This initiative forms part of the nation\u2019s ongoing preparation for the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).<\/p>\n
The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a vital mechanism of the United Nations Human Rights Council that evaluates the fulfilment of human rights obligations by all Member States. It serves as a platform for states and stakeholders to exchange best practices and work collaboratively to enhance human rights at the national level. These consultations represent a critical phase in Grenada\u2019s preparation of its national UPR report, which must reflect a comprehensive and inclusive consultation process.<\/p>\n
Permanent Secretary Roxie McLeish-Hutchinson alongside Foreign Service Officers actively working on the UPR, represented the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Export Development at the sessions. Stakeholders from various sectors, including other government ministries and civil society organisations, also participated. These collaborative efforts are essential, as each stakeholder contributes to the preparation of Grenada\u2019s national UPR report.<\/p>\n
The consultations aim to assess Grenada\u2019s progress in meeting its human rights obligations while identifying areas for improvement. The sessions provided a platform for diverse voices to engage in open dialogue and to foster greater transparency and collaboration in addressing human rights issues.<\/p>\n
The United Nations Country Teams play a crucial role in the UPR process by providing technical assistance and offering guidance on the reporting procedure, format, and content of the national report. They also enhance stakeholder engagement by increasing knowledge and awareness of the UPR to encourage active participation in the consultation process.<\/p>\n
The insights and feedback gathered during the consultations will directly inform Grenada\u2019s national UPR report. This inclusive and comprehensive document will serve as a roadmap for advancing human rights, addressing identified gaps, and reinforcing Grenada\u2019s commitment to international human rights standards.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Export Development reaffirms its dedication to promoting and protecting human rights across Grenada.
