On 24 January the UK formally handed over two specialised court multimedia podiums during a\u00a0 brief ceremony held at the Grenada Supreme Court. The podiums, obtained through the UK funded Serious Organized Crime and Anti-Corruption Programme (SOCAP), have significantly\u00a0 enhanced the operations of the 2 criminal courts since their installation last year. The judges,\u00a0 jurors, attorneys and members of the public can now better hear evidence from witnesses and\u00a0 arguments by lawyers during court proceedings as a result of the podiums\u2019 features. As well,\u00a0 documents being used in court proceedings can now be clearly displayed. The donation of these\u00a0 podiums follows previous support given in obtaining video link equipment for use in the\u00a0 magistrates\u2019 court.<\/p>\n
The handing over ceremony was attended by officials and representatives across the criminal\u00a0 justice sector in Grenada. Among them were the Acting Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean\u00a0 Supreme Court, The Honourable Justice Mario Michel; Attorney General and Minister for Legal\u00a0 Affairs Senator the Honourable Claudette Joseph; Director of Public Prosecutions Mr.\u00a0 Christopher Nelson KC; Chief Magistrate Francine Foster; Acting Commissioner of Police Randy\u00a0 Connaught; and Commissioner of Prisons Anthony Rogers; and Vice President of the Grenada\u00a0 Bar Association, Delonie Edwards. Members of Grenada\u2019s Criminal Justice Reform Committee\u00a0 were also in attendance.<\/p>\n
In his remarks at the brief ceremony, the Acting Chief Justice, Justice Mario Michel lauded the\u00a0 state-of the art features of the donated court multimedia podiums, that have been used in\u00a0 criminal court proceedings since June 2024, the Acting Chief Justice noted that the reports\u00a0 received indicate that the systems \u2018have provided tremendous support to the court and have\u00a0 positively impacted the conduct of criminal court proceedings in Grenada\u2019. The podiums, he\u00a0 noted, coupled with other technology currently used in the criminal courts, \u2018will transform the\u00a0 criminal courtrooms in Grenada into model \u2018high-tech\u2019 courtrooms. It is expected that this will\u00a0 help to speed up hearings, present information to the court in a more clear and visually appealing\u00a0 manner and facilitate the accurate presentation of evidence from mobile phones and other\u00a0 electronic devices.\u2019<\/p>\n
Justice Paula Gilford, High Court Judge of the criminal division credited it for revolutionising the\u00a0 way evidence is presented in trials. The system has enhanced the quality and effectiveness of\u00a0 evidence presentation as presentations are more engaging and memorable. Additionally,\u00a0witnesses are able to focus on their evidence and jurors are able to absorb evidence, such as\u00a0 photographs. Justice Gilford stated that the system has not only improved \u2018engagement and\u00a0 accessibility for court users\u2019 but has also streamlined the court\u2019s own operations.<\/p>\n
\u2018This is a game changer\u2026and has been a shift in the administration of criminal justice\u2019 \u2013 is how\u00a0 Mr. Christopher Nelson KC, Director of Public Prosecutions, described the impact the system has\u00a0 had on criminal court proceedings. The system\u2019s enhancement of the jury\u2019s experience and\u00a0 engagement which includes amplifying the sound of soft-spoken witnesses to being able to see\u00a0 the location of a crime scene.<\/p>\n
