Members of\u00a0<\/span>St. George\u2019s University<\/span>\u00a0faculty, staff, and alumni gathered in Grenada to honor the legacy of\u00a0<\/span>Dr.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Charles R. Modica<\/span>, its visionary co-founder and chancellor who turned a\u00a0 groundbreaking idea into a global leader in medical education. The SGU\u00a0<\/span>community celebrated Chancellor Modica\u2019s impact and leadership since the\u00a0 University\u2019s founding in 1977 with a special dedication ceremony to him on March 3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the ceremony, the SGU campus was officially named the Chancellor\u00a0 Charles Modica Campus. A bronze plaque was also dedicated to the\u00a0 Chancellor, which is located at the front of the Chancellery Building, the\u00a0 central administrative building at upper campus.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMany people have made an impact on this institution over its 48-year\u00a0 history, but none more so than Chancellor\u00a0<\/span>Modica,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Dr. Glen Jacobs<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>SGU<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>provost, said during his remarks at the ceremony. \u201cToday is a celebration of\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0 visionary leader, a true pioneer, a man who has not only shaped the University\u00a0 but has also touched the lives of so many with his caring and compassionate\u00a0 approach. His legacy is profound, and we pay homage to that by formally\u00a0 naming this campus in his honor.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The naming and plaque dedication ceremonies were also held at the same\u00a0 time as the\u00a0<\/span>2025 Art of Medicine continuing medical education (CME)\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>conference<\/span>, hosted by the\u00a0<\/span>School of Medicine\u00a0<\/span>Alumni Association (SOMAA).\u00a0 More than 40 alumni returned to Grenada to attend the CME and celebrate\u00a0 with Chancellor Modica. In addition to SOM alumni, among the 100 guests in\u00a0 attendance were SGU administration, members of faculty, staff, and specially\u00a0 invited guests.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An emotional Chancellor Modica thanked the audience and reminisced\u00a0 about the University\u2019s humble beginnings. He noted SGU\u2019s growth from a\u00a0 single medical school to encompassing four schools with over 31,000\u00a0<\/span>graduates including physicians, veterinarians, scientists, and public health\u00a0 and business professionals across the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am deeply humbled to have been awarded this honor, and I thank each\u00a0 and every one of you here today,\u201d said Chancellor Modica. \u201cIt brings me great\u00a0 joy to see how the University has grown and I\u2019m extremely grateful to the\u00a0 Charter Class for persevering and paving the way for thousands of students\u00a0 who would come after them.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chancellor Modica also expressed his thanks and gratitude for the University\u00a0 community.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNone of this would have been possible were it not for your hard work,\u00a0 dedication, and commitment. And I especially would like to recognize Dame Gloria Payne-Banfield, who answered the telegram I sent to the Government\u00a0 of Grenada over 51 years ago. If she didn\u2019t reply to me there would be no SGU\u00a0 today,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A tireless advocate for education, Chancellor Modica\u2019s leadership paved the\u00a0 way for thousands of students worldwide to pursue their dreams in both\u00a0 medicine and later veterinary medicine with the founding of the\u00a0<\/span>School of\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Veterinary Medicine\u00a0<\/span>in 2000.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Grenada, his dedication extended well beyond the medical field to his\u00a0 instrumental role in founding the\u00a0<\/span>School of Arts and Sciences\u00a0<\/span>and a\u00a0<\/span>School of\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Graduate Studies<\/span>, opening doors to higher education for Grenadians and the\u00a0 wider Caribbean region. His enduring commitment to the country\u2019s well being included his service to the Grenada Heart Foundation, the Fund for the\u00a0 Orphans and Elderly of Grenada,\u00a0<\/span>The Windward Islands Research and\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Education Foundation<\/span>, and to the provision of medical care to those in need.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For his outstanding service to Grenada, he was awarded The Most\u00a0 Distinguished Order of the Nation \u2013 Commander 2015. Dr. Modica received\u00a0 honorary doctoral degrees from both Northumbria University and Barry\u00a0 University in honor of his commitment to education and healthcare for all.<\/span><\/p>\n
