The Ministry of Education recently presented\u00a0 laptops to tertiary-level students as part of the Education Care Package, to improve the students\u2019\u00a0 educational experience and help address challenges following Hurricane Beryl.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Education Care Packages, first presented to students on Sept. 18, 2024, under the theme\u00a0 \u201cInvesting in Our Future,\u201d is a post-Hurricane Beryl education sector response to support students\u00a0 from Carriacou and Petite Martinique. A representative number of these students received laptops in person during the ceremony at the Ministry, and the remaining students collected theirs\u00a0 thereafter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vincent John of Lauriston, Carriacou, who is pursuing studies in electrical installation at the New\u00a0 Life Organisation (NEWLO), said the laptop will help him to work on his Caribbean Vocational\u00a0 Qualifications (CVQs) and other projects. \u201cI never personally owned a laptop. This is the first time\u00a0 I\u2019ve owned one,\u201d he shared. \u201cI would like to thank everybody for this programme. It\u2019s really\u00a0 helping a lot of students.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shea Tyson, a building technology student at TAMCC, who is from Harvey Vale, Carriacou, said,\u00a0 \u201cFrom the time of the hurricane to now, the care packages that the government has aided us with\u00a0 have been helping us very well in our day-to-day life.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Elvis Morain, Permanent Secretary with responsibility for Human Resources and Educational\u00a0 Development, emphasised the impact of the Education Care Package Programme, noting that it\u00a0 began with 60 students. \u201cOnce that support was given, we noticed the numbers went up, and today\u00a0 we are at 90. We are grateful for that. We also see the value of not having you delayed,\u201d Morain\u00a0 said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t want to delay your progression in terms of your studies\u2026so we felt that it was\u00a0 necessary, and I think that the government must be applauded for that effort.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More than $1.5 million in support through Education Care Packages is being disbursed to students\u00a0 over a 10-month period during the 2024-2025 school year. To date, more than $1.4 million has\u00a0 been paid out. Following Hurricane Beryl, students from Carriacou and Petite Martinique had to\u00a0 relocate to Grenada to begin or continue their education at the T.A. Marryshow Community\u00a0 College (TAMCC) and the New Life Organisation (NEWLO).<\/span><\/p>\n

Minister for Education, Sen. the Hon. David Andrew, reminded the students that the only payback\u00a0 needed is their success. He said, \u201cI am happy to preside over this handover ceremony as Minister\u00a0 for Education. The investment and the support, and just to hear you saying how appreciative\u00a0 you\u2019ve been of it\u2026.makes me know that our efforts and the investment of our people and the\u00a0 government have not gone to waste. Commendations to you.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Education Care Packages include financial support for the first month: $2,000 for\u00a0 accommodation, meals, and transportation; $500 for uniforms; and $1,200 for textbooks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Starting from the second month, the payment continues at $2,000 monthly, as the costs for\u00a0 uniforms and textbooks were already covered in the initial payment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
