The Government of Grenada announces the introduction of several\u00a0 important pieces of legislation in the upcoming parliamentary sessions on July 24 and 25, 2025. These bills represent significant steps toward enhancing children\u2019s rights, addressing gender-based\u00a0 violence, and advancing Grenada\u2019s constitutional development.<\/p>\n

Spotlight Initiative Bills \u2013 First Reading\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Three bills under the Spotlight Initiative will receive their first reading. The first reading simply\u00a0 means that the bills will be merely introduced for reading but will not be debated or passed.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Status of Children Bill 2025<\/b>: This legislation aims to improve the existing Status of\u00a0 Children Act and to provide greater certainty and remove discrimination based on birth\u00a0 status. The bill seeks to ensure that all children are treated equally under the law regardless\u00a0 of the marital status of their parents.<\/li>\n
  2. Marriage Amendment Bill 2025<\/b>: This amendment increases the minimum age for valid\u00a0 marriages to eighteen years, thus protecting minors from early marriages. The existing\u00a0 marriage act only voids marriages where a child to the marriage is under sixteen years. The\u00a0 amendment will also permit individuals who are eighteen and older to now marry without\u00a0 requiring parental consent.<\/li>\n
  3. Age of Civil Legal Responsibility Amendment Bill 2025<\/b>: This bill seeks to allow minors\u00a0 aged 16 years or older to access sexual or reproductive healthcare without parental consent,\u00a0 especially in circumstances which may pose a danger to the health or wellbeing of minors,\u00a0 but where their parents may nonetheless not consent to them having access to such\u00a0 healthcare.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    These bills are aimed at fostering gender equality, protecting our children, and eliminating violence\u00a0 against women and girls, in particular. Grenada is one of six Caribbean states participating in this\u00a0 initiative, which also includes countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Pacific.<\/p>\n

    Oath of Allegiance Bill \u2013 This Bill Will be Taken Through All Stages\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

    The Oath of Allegiance Bills No. 1 and No. 2 will be taken through all stages in the House of\u00a0 Representatives.<\/p>\n

    This constitutional amendment changes the oath of allegiance prescribed in the Constitution,\u00a0 removing references to \u201cHis Majesty King Charles, the Third, His heirs and Successors\u201d and\u00a0 replacing them with \u201cGrenada.\u201d This amendment represents an important step in Grenada\u2019s constitutional development and national identity and aims to ensure that public officials and high\u00a0 functionaries swear allegiance to Grenada and the people of Grenada on their assumption to high\u00a0 public office, consistent with the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem.<\/p>\n

    The public is encouraged to stay engaged on these important legislative developments. The\u00a0 Government will continue public education sessions on these legislative changes.<\/p>\n
