The Caribbean Soil Laboratory Network\u00a0 (CARSOLAN) is poised to benefit from the expertise of the Global Soil Laboratory Network\u00a0 (GLOSOLAN) to improve soil analytical capacity by strengthening soil data systems, improving laboratory quality, and representation in global soil initiatives.<\/p>\n
These priority areas were identified during a virtual meeting on\u00a011 September 2025<\/b>, held under\u00a0 the theme\u00a0\u201c<\/i>Strengthening Collaboration with GLOSOLAN<\/i><\/b>.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n
The session brought together Caribbean soil laboratory representatives from Guyana, Antigua and\u00a0 Barbuda, Belize, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Haiti, Jamaica, Barbados, regional partners, and\u00a0 international experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to\u00a0 chart a path toward harmonized laboratory practices and enhanced capacity across the region.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the Caribbean Soil Laboratory Network (CARSOLAN), Mr. David B. Fredericks\u00a0 (Guyana), explained that the meeting \u201cSets the stage for real momentum.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Fredericks, \u201cIf we are to move CARSOLAN forward, we need direction,\u00a0 harmonization, and the upgrading of our laboratories. That is where the real challenge\u2014and the\u00a0 real progress\u2014will come.\u201d<\/p>\n
Feature presenter Dr. Mansonia A. Politi Moncada, International Soil Laboratory Specialist (FAO),\u00a0 outlined GLOSOLAN\u2019s mandate to harmonize soil laboratory methods worldwide. Supported by\u00a0 colleague Dr. \u00c1lvaro Calleja Huerta, she highlighted opportunities for Caribbean labs to align with\u00a0 global best practices through standardizing soil analysis procedures, establishing national soil\u00a0 laboratory networks, strengthening training and proficiency testing, and integrating Caribbean data\u00a0 into international soil monitoring systems.<\/p>\n
The meeting concluded with key agreements, including a review of existing soil laboratory\u00a0 manuals to ensure alignment with GLOSOLAN standards, identification of gaps in procedures,\u00a0 equipment, and resources, and a collective commitment to establish National Soil Laboratory\u00a0 Networks (NASOLANs). CARSOLAN also agreed to work closely with FAO\u2019s experts to\u00a0 strengthen training and technical support across the Caribbean.<\/p>\n
Participants of this meeting included Chair David B. Fredericks (Guyana), Vice-Chair Dr.\u00a0 Beverley Wood (Barbados), representatives from Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Grenada, Saint\u00a0 Lucia, Haiti, and Jamaica, along with Dr. Ronen Francis- Executive Director of the PISLM, Mr.\u00a0Lakeram Singh Chief Technical Officer of PISLM, and experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.<\/p>\n
CARSOLAN will continue its collaboration with GLOSOLAN by participating in two upcoming virtual engagements: the Latin America & Caribbean Regional Meeting on 9 October 2025 and\u00a0 the GLOSOLAN Annual Plenary Meeting from 11\u201313 November 2025, (virtual) a global event\u00a0 featuring elections and key updates.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
