A Coach Rooted in Purpose\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
Melanie Thomas\u2019 journey began in cleats at just four years old. From her early days as a centre\u00a0back, orchestrating plays and commanding leadership, to coaching at all levels in the United States,\u00a0 her trajectory was clear. \u201cI was a natural coach on the field,\u201d she shares, reflecting on how her dual passion for football and education led her into youth development and talent identification.<\/p>\n
She has coached at the Women\u2019s Premier Soccer League and professional levels, served as a\u00a0Director of Operations for the University of New Mexico\u2019s women\u2019s team, and held director roles in major youth clubs in both Seattle and Los Angeles. Her credentials include a USSF A Youth\u00a0 License, UEFA C, and certifications as a Coach Educator and Talent ID specialist, qualifications that make her one of the most technically accomplished women\u2019s football leaders in the Caribbean today.<\/p>\n
The Grenadian Opportunity: Growing from the Ground Up\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
Despite her extensive footballing background, Melanie\u2019s appointment at the GFA marks her first foray into women\u2019s football development at the international level. And she sees this as a pivotal\u00a0 opportunity, both for herself and for Grenada.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis role is about creating systems and opportunities that did not exist before,\u201d she explains. \u201cMy\u00a0 immediate priority is working with schools at the primary and secondary levels to ensure they have the support needed to get girls on the pitch. We are not starting from scratch. There are structures\u00a0 already in place. What we need is to align, support, and grow them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her strategy? Equity in access. \u201cWe are not reinventing the wheel,\u201d she clarifies. \u201cWe are just making sure girls are invited to roll it too.\u201d<\/p>\n
Culture Shift: Football is for Her Too<\/b><\/p>\n
Melanie is clear-eyed about the challenges: \u201cOne of the biggest barriers is not infrastructure, it\u2019s\u00a0 mindset. There is still a cultural perception that football is a men\u2019s sport. That is the real challenge. We have to help families, teachers, and community leaders understand that football for girls is a vehicle; not just for sport, but for confidence, scholarships, careers, and character development.\u201d<\/p>\n
She is working to dismantle this stigma by focusing on community engagement, coach education,\u00a0 and grassroots expansion. Under her leadership, the GFA plans to relaunch girls\u2019 grassroots<\/p>\n
festivals, support school competitions, and grow participation in every parish. With local buy-in,\u00a0 Melanie believes the change will be transformative.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf we can make football a fun, natural choice for girls in their free time, not something unusual or\u00a0 intimidating, that is success.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tied to a Bigger Vision<\/b><\/p>\n
Melanie\u2019s appointment aligns directly with President Marlon Glean\u2019s bold vision for football in\u00a0 Grenada: one where women\u2019s and girls\u2019 football is no longer an afterthought, but a<\/p>\n
strategic pillar of national growth. Under President Glean\u2019s administration, the GFA has prioritized capacity building, youth development, and international partnerships, a context that gives Melanie\u00a0 the runway to make real change.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe vision for women\u2019s football is not just inclusion, it\u2019s integration. Girls should be able to access\u00a0 every layer of the football pyramid, from grassroots to elite.\u201d<\/p>\n
Melanie will also be working alongside FIFA Talent Coach Neil Murphy, creating a powerful duo\u00a0 dedicated to raising the technical and developmental standards of Grenadian football.<\/p>\n

While many of Melanie\u2019s goals are technical such as increasing player pools, enhancing coaching standards and fostering school-club pipelines, her deeper aim is empowerment.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery time I help a girl realize she belongs in this game, I remember why I started,\u201d she says. \u201cThis\u00a0 is about more than goals and trophies. It is about belief.\u201d<\/p>\n
