Health policymakers and senior health officials from\u00a0\u00a0across the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States gathered in Grenada this week\u00a0for the 38th OECS Pharmaceutical Procurement Service Policy Board meeting and the\u00a0\u00a011th Council of OECS Health Ministers to advance regional cooperation on medicines\u00a0\u00a0access and health service delivery.<\/p>\n

On 21 October 2025, the PPS Policy Board met for a full day of deliberations focused\u00a0\u00a0on improving access to essential medicines. One of the major topics discussed was a\u00a0\u00a0public private partnership, already established in St. Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis that\u00a0\u00a0provides reduced cost for insulin, a critical medication for people living with diabetes.<\/p>\n

Health leaders hailed this development as a transformative achievement in regional\u00a0\u00a0pharmaceutical equity, with the potential to save lives and ease financial burdens for\u00a0\u00a0thousands of families.<\/p>\n

The announcement was officially made by the Hon. Philip Telesford, Grenada\u2019s\u00a0\u00a0Minister of Health and Chair of the OECS Council of Health Ministers, during a press\u00a0\u00a0briefing on the 22 October 2025. The Grenadian Health Minster urged other member\u00a0\u00a0states to adopt similar approaches to expand access to insulin.<\/p>\n

According to Chairman Telesford, such an arrangement can create greater access\u00a0\u00a0to the life-saving medicine at significantly reduced prices, and it will improve\u00a0\u00a0affordability for people living with diabetes, and reduce financial strain on families\u00a0\u00a0across the region.<\/p>\n

The PPS Policy Board, guided by regional champion Mr. Francis Burnett, Interim Head\u00a0\u00a0OECS-PPS, which was established nearly forty years ago, declared the insulin pricing\u00a0\u00a0initiative as a significant advance.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce member-states gets onboard it means their citizens will be able to access\u00a0\u00a0insulin in the public and private sectors at significantly reduced prices\u201d, he explained.<\/p>\n

The OECS Pharmaceutical Procurement Service currently procures approximately\u00a0\u00a0120,000 vials of insulin annually, and reduced prices will have a positive impact on\u00a0\u00a0both public health outcomes and procurement budgets.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Director General of the OECS, H.E. Dr. Didacus Jules, underscored the\u00a0\u00a0importance of regional solidarity and a shared vision in addressing the geopolitical,\u00a0\u00a0financial, and health challenges facing member states. He described the meetings as\u00a0\u00a0highly productive and thanked the Government of Grenada for its hospitality.<\/p>\n
