The Government of Grenada on Monday December 15 officially launched the Ministry of the Blue Economy and Marine Affairs, on board the Esta Sea marking a major step toward sustainable ocean development and economic transformation.<\/p>\n
This new Ministry represents a strategic investment in Grenada\u2019s future. By prioritizing the Blue Economy, Grenada signals its readiness to lead in building a sustainable, inclusive, and forward looking ocean economy\u2014one that creates jobs, strengthens food and energy security, enhances climate resilience, and promotes social equity while safeguarding marine resources.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the event, Prime Minister, Honourable Dickon Mitchell highlighted, \u201cThis Ministry will ensure that Grenada\u2019s ocean space becomes a driver of innovation, prosperity, and resilience for generations to come. The Blue Economy represents a new frontier for economic growth and sustainable development. Our waters are not just geography\u2014they are jurisdiction, responsibility, and opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cThis new Ministry sits at the intersection of environment, economy, and national development. But let me be clear\u2014the Blue Economy is not the responsibility of one ministry alone. It is a whole-of-government and whole-of-society effort, deeply integrated into our macroeconomic planning, education system, and security posture.\u201d<\/p>\n
Government\u2019s Vision for the Blue Economy
\n\u2022 Create good jobs and new opportunities for our people.
\n\u2022 Support food and energy security through innovative marine solutions. \u2022 Improve climate resilience to protect communities and ecosystems.
\n\u2022 Promote social equity while safeguarding marine resources.<\/p>\n
The Ministry will serve as the hub for policy, innovation, and partnerships that unlock the full potential of our ocean resources while ensuring sustainability for generations to come investing in ocean-based industries, renewable marine energy, and sustainable fisheries, Grenada is positioning itself as a global leader in climate-smart development.<\/p>\n
Strengthening Maritime Security<\/p>\n
Recognizing that ocean-based industries require stability, the Government has committed to strengthening maritime security. In the 2026 Budget Debate, the Minister of Finance announced plans to acquire a new Coast Guard vessel to:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Deter illegal fishing and marine pollution
\n\u2022 Enforce maritime boundaries
\n\u2022 Improve search and rescue operations
\n\u2022 Build investor confidence in Grenada\u2019s ocean space<\/p>\n
Building Talent for the Future<\/p>\n
The Ministry will thrive on talent, not just resources. Grenada will expand training and employment opportunities in:
\n\u2022 Ocean engineering
\n\u2022 Marine biotechnology
\n\u2022 Digital fisheries monitoring
\n\u2022 Offshore energy maintenance
\n\u2022 Maritime law and logistics<\/p>\n
Through TVET reform, university partnerships, and entrepreneurship support, the Government aims to create a pipeline of skilled professionals ready to lead in ocean innovation<\/p>\n
