{"id":13608,"date":"2026-01-07T08:39:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T12:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drealfmgrenada.com\/?p=13608"},"modified":"2026-01-07T08:39:00","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T12:39:00","slug":"government-provides-update-on-u-s-noaa-fisheries-import-measures-and-grenadas-reapplication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drealfmgrenada.com\/index.php\/2026\/01\/07\/government-provides-update-on-u-s-noaa-fisheries-import-measures-and-grenadas-reapplication\/","title":{"rendered":"Government Provides Update On U.S. NOAA Fisheries Import Measures And Grenada\u2019s Reapplication"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government of Grenada wishes to update fisherfolk, exporters, processors, and all stakeholders on the actions taken to address the recent\u00a0<b>U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries import restrictions<\/b>\u00a0related to the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA).<\/p>\n<p>Following NOAA\u2019s preliminary and final notifications issued in August 2025, Grenada was informed that\u00a0<b>exports of certain fish and fish products to the United States would be subject to import restrictions as of 1 January 2026<\/b>, due to\u00a0<b>specific legal and procedural gaps identified under the MMPA requirements.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Status of Grenada\u2019s Reapplication<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of the Blue Economy and Marine Affairs confirms that Grenada successfully submitted a complete reapplication for a Comparability Finding through NOAA\u2019s International Affairs Information Capture and Reporting System (IAICRS) prior to the 1 January 2026 implementation date.<\/p>\n<p>NOAA has formally acknowledged receipt of Grenada\u2019s reapplication, and the review process is currently underway. NOAA has advised that the timing of a final determination will depend on the completion of its legal, scientific, and administrative review processes.<\/p>\n<p><b>Actions Taken by the Government<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Since receiving the initial notification, the Government\u00a0<b>has taken decisive steps to address the issues identified by NOAA<\/b>. Key actions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Legislative reform<\/b>\u00a0through the passage and gazetting of the\u00a0<b>Fisheries (Amendment) Act, 2025<\/b>, which strengthens legal protections for marine mammals and establishes a statutory observer and monitoring framework<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Promulgation of the Fisheries (Marine Mammals) Regulations, 2025<\/b>, which prohibit intentional harm to marine mammals, mandate reporting of interactions, and introduce penalties for non-compliance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Development of a Marine Mammal Management Plan<\/b>, aligning Grenada\u2019s fisheries operations with international best practices and U.S. MMPA import requirements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Strengthening monitoring and reporting systems<\/b>, including the use of vessel logbooks, interaction reporting forms, and observer and electronic monitoring frameworks<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Engagement with international partners<\/b>, including NOAA and FAO, to ensure technical compliance and transparency throughout the reassessment process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Public Communication and Expectations<\/b><\/p>\n<p>While the Government\u00a0<b>remains hopeful that NOAA\u2019s review will be concluded in the coming weeks<\/b>, it is important to note that the final determination rests solely with U.S. authorities. As such, no definitive timeline can be guaranteed at this stage.<\/p>\n<p>What can be stated with confidence is that Grenada has now completed the corrective measures required to support reassessment, and its reapplication is actively under review by NOAA.<\/p>\n<p><b>Commitment to Fisherfolk and the Blue Economy<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Government recognizes the significant economic and social importance of the fisheries sector and remains committed to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Protecting fisher livelihoods and export market access<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Strengthening sustainable fisheries management<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Ensuring compliance with international trade and conservation standards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fisherfolk and stakeholders are encouraged to continue complying with reporting and monitoring requirements, as these measures are critical to securing a positive outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Further updates will be provided as soon as official communication is
