St. George\u2019s University\u00a0(SGU) has\u00a0 formalized a new five-year partnership with the\u00a0Caribbean Public Health\u00a0Agency\u00a0(CARPHA) through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU),\u00a0 advancing collaborative research, training, and innovation aimed at\u00a0 strengthening public health systems across the Caribbean.<\/p>\n
Signed on April 21 in Georgetown, Guyana, the MOU establishes a strategic\u00a0 framework for joint efforts to address the region\u2019s most pressing health\u00a0 challenges, including communicable and noncommunicable diseases as well\u00a0 as environmental health issues.<\/p>\n
Through the agreement, SGU and CARPHA will work together on a range of\u00a0 initiatives, including public health research, student training and workforce\u00a0 development, capacity building in epidemiology and analytics, and digital\u00a0 innovation to support stronger health systems. The collaboration also\u00a0 includes data sharing, One Health initiatives, and joint execution of CARPHA\u2019s\u00a0 Annual Health Research Conference.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis MOU concretizes the well-established, long-standing relationship with CARPHA and SGU,\u201d said Dr. Lisa Indar, executive director of CARPHA. \u201cIt will\u00a0 also position CARPHA and SGU as key regional leaders in public health\u00a0 research and practice across the Caribbean and support the translation of\u00a0 research findings into evidence-informed policy recommendations for our\u00a0 Member States. This also exemplifies CARPHA\u2019s innovations in partnerships to collectively address public health in the Region.\u201d<\/p>\n
Representing SGU,\u00a0Dr. Marios Loukas,\u00a0SGU president and dean of the School\u00a0 of Medicine, emphasized the broader impact of the collaboration. \u201cBy aligning SGU\u2019s academic and research strength with CARPHA\u2019s regional\u00a0 leadership, we are building an integrated platform to drive innovation,\u00a0 expand research capacity, and accelerate the translation of evidence into\u00a0 policy and practice. This collaboration strengthens a more resilient, equitable,\u00a0and healthier Caribbean, positioning the region as a global leader in public\u00a0 health innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n
The agreement builds on a longstanding relationship between the two\u00a0 institutions. SGU students have previously participated in internships with\u00a0 CARPHA, gaining hands-on experience in regional public health initiatives,\u00a0 while faculty have collaborated on research and contributed to regional\u00a0 stakeholder networks. In 2015, SGU also hosted CARPHA\u2019s Annual Health\u00a0 Research Conference on its Grenada campus, further demonstrating its\u00a0 commitment to advancing public health research in the region.<\/p>\n
