(GIS)-Minister of Labour, Honourable Peter David and Labour Commissioner, Mr. Cyrus Griffith worked late into the\u00a0night\u00a0Monday in a meeting with leaders of the Public Sector Trade Unions & Staff Associations in an attempt to get the unions back to the negotiating\u00a0table\u00a0with Government\u2019s Pension Engagement\u00a0Committee\u00a0(PEC).<\/p>\n
Talks between the parties broke down when unions walked off the table\u00a0on October 3, 2018, claiming that the Government\u2019s PEC\u00a0was in breach of the signed\u00a0Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the issue of prepayment of pensions otherwise referred to as GRATUITY.<\/p>\n
Examination of the MOU did not reveal any agreement on the payment of 25% gratuity at the point of retirement from the service\u00a0and when the PEC placed a 2% gratuity with a 98% pension on the table, the unions walked away in protest. Since then, initiated by the Grenada Union of Teachers the unions took industrial action.<\/p>\n
Monday\u2019s meeting lasted for three hours, extending into the night\u00a0and Minister David was able to reach an understanding\u00a0with\u00a0the unions\u00a0that,\u00a0having lifted the threat of an injunction,\u00a0the PEC will set aside its 2% offer and that the issue of the gratuity\u00a0and discussions of how much gratuity and\u00a0possible permutations of payment\u00a0to ensure compliance with the FRA will be discussed.<\/p>\n
Minister David was tasked with getting the PEC to communicate that in writing to the unions and it is expected that talks between the parties will resume on Friday morning.\u00a0Now that the threat of the injunction has been lifted,\u00a0unions likewise are expected to get workers back to work so that negotiations can resume.<\/p>\n
Minister David expressed the view that a resolution to this impasse is within sight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
