ST. GEORGE\u2019S, Grenada, February 8, 2019 (CMC) \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0The Prime Minister of Grenada, Dr. Keith Mitchell, says his administration is committed to the nation\u2019s development, as Grenada celebrates 45 years of political independence from Britain, today.<\/p>\n

In his Independence Day message, Mitchell said 45 years means that the island has achieved a certain level of maturity.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a nation, we have matured throughout many experiences, over the last four-and-a-half decades,\u201d he observed.<\/p>\n

He noted that the development of the island has been on an upward trend and his government remains committed to enhancing the country, economically.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we celebrate the 45th anniversary, we recommit ourselves to the development of our beloved homeland. I encourage you to continue being the patriotic nationals that you are, and I commend your contributions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He also underscored the importance of unity and the need to work together to further enhance development.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven as we remain committed to our national priorities, we remain committed to the work of regional integration, such as the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the regional organisations continue to champion the interest of regional states.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is through collaboration that we will maximise the benefits of these efforts,\u201d \u00a0he noted.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the OECS Commission has congratulated Grenada on its anniversary of independence.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Commission acknowledges the profound contribution, which Grenada continues to make toward the growth and development of the OECS family, and looks forward to continuing in the service of the government and people of Grenada, for the realization of their development aspirations,\u201d the Commission said, today.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration in the United States also congratulated Grenada on its 45th<\/sup>\u00a0independence anniversary.<\/p>\n

US Secretary of State, Michael R. Pompeo.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cOn behalf of the government of the United States, congratulations to the people of Grenada on your 45th anniversary of independence on February 7,\u201d said US Secretary of State, Michael R. Pompeo, \u00a0in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrenada is a warm and welcoming host to thousands of Americans each year, and many US students also call the \u2018Spice Isle\u2019 home,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Pompeo said the United States values the \u201cstrong people-to-people ties\u201d with Grenada, stating that they have \u201claid the foundation for our ongoing partnership with Grenada, to combat drug and human trafficking, mitigate the effects of natural disasters, and promote economic prosperity and entrepreneurship\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe look forward to deepening cooperation in these areas, as we work, together, to implement the US-Caribbean 2020 initiative,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Pompeo said the United States \u201cvalues this longstanding friendship and wishes the citizens of Grenada a happy Independence Day celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grenada officially gained independence from Britain on February 7, 1974.<\/p>\n

Over the objections of the opposition, and an eventual boycott of the ongoing talks with Britain by the opponents, the late Prime Minister, Eric Mathew Gairy, \u201cpersevered, and Grenada was granted independence\u201d, according to\u00a0Caribbeanelections.com<\/a><\/p>\n

It said Grenada continues to practice a modified Westminster parliamentary system, based on the British model, with a governor general, appointed by and representing the British monarch (head of state), and a prime minister, who is both leader of the majority party and the head of government.<\/p>\n

Sir Eric was Grenada\u2019s first prime minister and Sir Leo de Gale its first Governor-General.<\/p>\n
