The Ministry of Agriculture is in the process of developing the Beekeeping sub-sector; through support from the Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO).<\/p>\n
Through a project titled, \u201cStrengthening the Apiculture Value Chain in Grenada,\u201d the Ministry will support the development of policy and an action plan to increase livestock production including honey production, the Development of a National Honey Bee Surveillance system, training of beekeepers and extension officers and improvement of the institutional capacity of the Bee keepers association of Grenada.<\/p>\n
This project falls within the Ministry of Agriculture\u2019s objective of promoting sustainable agriculture and strengthening of Food & Nutrition Security.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hope to do a consultation on the existing and potential market opportunities, that exist,\u201d explained\u00a0FAO Project Consultant Dr.\u00a0 Patricia Bedford who met with beekeepers and staff at the Ministry of Agriculture on Tuesday 11th<\/sup>\u00a0June.<\/p>\n The project will support the design, monitoring and implementation of approaches, policies and interventions that promote equitable access to and sustainable management of productive natural resources. \u00a0It will also support the improvement of access by poor rural producers and households to appropriate technologies, inputs and market.<\/p>\n Dr. Kimond Cummings Chief Veterinary & Livestock Officer, within the Ministry of Agriculture elaborating on the significance of the FAO backed project said that part of the funding will be used to\u00a0\u00a0 develop our surveillance system, market assessment and value chain.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe are having ongoing assessments to see where we are at, in terms of our production,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n Over ten persons participated in the consultation during which participant Jeffrey Augustine underscored the importance of having talks with members of the sector.\u00a0 \u201cComing out of this session we have made positive advancements. I am looking forward to working with young people and also those older bee keepers.\u201d<\/p>\n Another of the participants, Andy Paul said \u201cI think it was a very productive session.
