{"id":4018,"date":"2019-07-16T09:30:12","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T13:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/drealfmgrenada.com\/?p=4018"},"modified":"2019-07-16T09:30:12","modified_gmt":"2019-07-16T13:30:12","slug":"plant-quarantine-unit-to-increase-awareness-with-support-from-travelers-dont-pack-a-pest-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drealfmgrenada.com\/index.php\/2019\/07\/16\/plant-quarantine-unit-to-increase-awareness-with-support-from-travelers-dont-pack-a-pest-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Plant Quarantine Unit To Increase Awareness With Support From Travelers Don\u2019t Pack A Pest Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ministry of Agriculture and Lands<\/strong>&#8211; Grenada is looking forward to receiving support to safeguard food and agriculture through the Travelers\u2019 \u201cDon\u2019t Pack a Pest Program,\u201d (DPAP), which is supported by the U.S. Department of<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.<br \/>\nThe Plant Quarantine Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture is the key negotiating body for the project.<\/p>\n<p>This week, the unit hosted a delegation from the program, with the aim to develop a signage proposal, for funding and implementation at different ports of entry here.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4020 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/drealfmgrenada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/MBIA-OFFICIAL-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>The delegation from the DPAP made a presentation to staff at the Island\u2019s main point of entry, the Maurice Bishop International Airport (MBIA) on Wednesday July 10th ,2019. They also<br \/>\ntoured the facility to identify potential sites for erecting signs.<\/p>\n<p>Denis Martin head of the delegation, in making his presentation to members of different departments at MBIA said that the organization is closing the loop on raising awareness on how<br \/>\nthere can be greater control of the number of pests and diseases transferred at the points of entry.<\/p>\n<p>An initiative as he furthered was undertaken in the Caribbean to deal with risks associated with increased travelers.<br \/>\n\u201cWith that increased volume comes that increased risk that travelers take when they pack a little bit for vacation or home when they travel; That Mango, Orange or Banana, may harbor<br \/>\nsome plant pests that can have a devastating effect on the environment and the islands in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits of the program are geared towards protecting the agriculture,livelihoods of people who work in agriculture and our food supply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Travelers Don\u2019t Pack a Pest includes airing a sixty (60) second video and the placement of signs at strategic areas in major airports and cruise ship ports, along with distribution of other<br \/>\npublic education materials to the traveling public.<\/p>\n<p>These program elements deliver a simple message, \u201cWhen you travel, declare agriculture items, Don\u2019t Pack a Pest.\u201d<br \/>\nPlant Quarantine Officer within the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, Mr. Thaddeus Peters underscored the importance of prevention when it comes to pest and disease management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFruit, vegetable, plants and plant products are a pathway for the transmission for plant pest and disease. When diseases move into new territories it can have devastating impacts on the local agricultural sector, economy and lots of people get affected. It is important to start prevention as early as possible.\u201d<br \/>\nLenworth Gordon Marketing and Property Manager at the Grenada Airports Authority(GAA) outlined the benefits of the undertaking. He said,\u201d we are always seeking to raise the awareness of the traveling public about the Do\u2019s and Don\u2019ts, so when passengers transit the airport they abide by the rules and regulations. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>The Program has supported more than 50 ports of entry where signs and\/or videos are displayed in the U.S. and the Caribbean, with 9 active programs in the region.<\/p>\n<p>The Travelers Don\u2019t Pack a Pest program is designed to raise public awareness about the risks associated with passengers potentially introducing pests and diseases into Grenada, the United States and the Caribbean Region, by carrying agricultural and food items in their luggage when they travel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Ministry of Agriculture and Lands&#8211;
