This practice is associated with \u00a0good nutrition and healthy weight, reduced chronic disease risk, and overall health .\u00a0 Theseattributes are the focusof the Grenada Food &amp; Nutrition Council ( GFNC), as the Council promotes eating healthy at young ages through its <strong>Curious Little Hands in the Kitchen Program (CLHK)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Council\u00a0 through collaboration with the 4H\u00a0 Club, held its first\u00a0 CLHK\u2019s session for 2019\u00a0 at the St.Michael\u2019s Roman Catholic School at Byelands, one of the pilot schools under the Zero Hunger Initiative,on Wednesday\u00a0 28<sup>th<\/sup> August , 2019.<\/p>\n<p>10 students from the School\u2019s 4H club, under the guidance of officers of the GFNC were trained to create five dishes as replacements for\u00a0 unhealthy snacks and beverages. The items produced include Avocado Sandwiches, Carrot Sandwiches, Banana Mango Bread,Fruit Pizza and ChikyPlantain Tots.The students, who worked in three groups were allowed to work with local fruits and vegetables such as\u00a0 watermelons, cantaloupes, avocados andplantains . Their training included basic kitchen safety guidelines and techniques, such as grating and mincing . There were positive reviews from the students about the training session as they explained the different techniques used.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made sandwiches with avocadoes and cheese, I grated the cheese and spread it on the bread.I also made open face sandwiches,\u201d said Shanika Bedeau.<\/p>\n<p>Jadie Morin\u00a0 explained how he made Chiky Plantain Tots, \u201cI grated the plantain, added\u00a0 chicken and seasoning, rolled into balls then placed into the oven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The teacher responsible for the 4Hclub, Ms.Fabian Lalitte, who was influential in bringing the program to her school\u00a0 said, \u201cI thought it was a good idea\u00a0 to expose them (students) to healthy snacks . This would help the children to\u00a0 think wisely as they would be more conscious of what they are eating. They had fun so I think they would share what they have learnt with the other students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Grenada Food and Nutrition Council has worked with over 10 schools to implement the Curious Little Hands in the Kitchen Program.Ms.Jessie Douglas, Community Nutrition Supervisor at the GFNC, underscored the importance of the program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>We want to start with our young children.We want them to get an appreciation for local foods and help them prepare these foods.We expect them to go home and share with their families and friends on the items they prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe often times tell children how to eat healthy, but we do not show them\u00a0 how to\u00a0 prepare\u00a0 healthy foods. What they learn today will benefit them,\u201d said Ms.Annah Abraham, Agricultural Officer within the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, responsible for the St.Andrew\u2019s District of the 4H Unit<\/p>\n<p>The Programprovides a foundation for healthy eating by inspiring children to learn to cook easy, inexpensive, tasty foods,\u00a0 using\u00a0 locally grown produce.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Teaching children how to eat healthy at a young age increases\u00a0 the likelihood of them staying healthy throughout their lives.
