In an effort to encourage knowledge sharing among farmers and extension officers, the Northern District of the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, hosted officials and farmers from the Western District on Thursday 29th August 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The exchange visit was organized by the Extension Division of the North, which allowed participants to visit three sites:\u00a0The\u00a0Diamond Chocolate Estate, Farms of\u00a0Mr.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Denrick<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Charles of Waltham St. Markand Stephen Lewis of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Chantimelle<\/span><\/span>\u00a0St. Patrick.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The initiative, which was held for the first time for this year, provided a platform for Agricultural Officers and farmers alike to be engaged on important matters involving the sector.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is\u00a0wonderful,\u00a0I really appreciate the\u00a0thought\u00a0and\u00a0activity today. It is important to share\u00a0ideas\u00a0and\u00a0to experience different farms and their\u00a0techniques.\u00a0I think it is a good exercise,\u201d said\u00a0Minister of Agriculture and Lands, Hon. Yolande Bain Horsford.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0participants\u00a0got\u00a0to\u00a0understand\u00a0the different stages of\u00a0production\u00a0of chocolate at the Diamond Estate, understand the dynamics of soursop and short crop production.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very\u00a0informative,\u00a0very\u00a0interactive; the\u00a0farmers in the\u00a0Western district got to see the\u00a0agricultural\u00a0practices\u00a0utilized\u00a0by\u00a0farmers from the\u00a0north. It allows farmers to learn from other farmers,\u201d said\u00a0participant\u00a0\u00a0Eamon Thomas, Extension officer with the Climate Smart and Rural Enterprise Development Project ( SAEP)\u201d .<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Assistant\u00a0Extension officer with the Ministry of Agriculture\u2019s Western Division Brenda\u00a0Phillip\u00a0also spoke highly of the session.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt gives farmers an opportunity\u00a0to network\u00a0with each\u00a0other, explore\u00a0the different\u00a0geographic\u00a0areas \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to see what different farmers\u00a0do.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The undertaking is\u00a0 an educational\u00a0initiative\u00a0which allows participants to\u00a0socialize\u00a0said John\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Jogie<\/span><\/span>, Extension officer for the North. \u201cWe want farmers to educate themselves along the line\u00a0but at the same time we must\u00a0socialize\u00a0and interact with each other. There may be practices which may be learnt, that may be beneficial to another farmer on another holding.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mr.\u00a0Maximus\u00a0Lazarus District Supervisor for the North spoke of the importance of having such undertaking and hopes that the event will become an annual one.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFarming is basically the oldest\u00a0profession.Farmers\u00a0don\u2019t usually take a day to interact and socialize but there\u00a0should be a day when farmers\u00a0island wide\u00a0take a day from the\u00a0farming activities.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The day ended with a small get together at the Plains playing field in St. Patrick, where farmers and other members of the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands\u00a0<\/span><\/span>were engaged in many social activities<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
