He showed it off on an even bigger stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">Peters won the javelin throw Sunday night for his country\u2019s second-ever gold medal at the world championships. He joins the ranks of sprinter Kirani James, the sprinter who captured the 400-meter title in 2011. Peters remembers being glued to his television that day \u2014 and being inspired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">\u201cThat was an unbelievable moment for our whole country,\u201d Peters said. \u201cIf he can do it, it\u2019s possible for everybody to have a chance to become a world champion.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1470255291270-0\" class=\"DFPSlot c0143 c016\" data-key=\"ad-placeholder\" data-google-query-id=\"CPm4tb-eiuUCFYNjwQod8-YLKw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_15786418\/APNews\/site\/article\/midarticle1_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">A junior at Mississippi State, Peters\u2019 winning throw was 86.89 meters as he added another title to the NCAA championships crown he won in June and Pan-Am Games win in August. Magnus Kirt of Estonia was second (86.21) and Johannes Vetter of Germany was third (85.37).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">\u201cThere are no words to explain being a world champion,\u201d Peters said. \u201cI\u2019m grateful for the chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">Growing up, he had two ambitions \u2014 be a famous cricket player or the next Usain Bolt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">But the javelin became his calling when on his first try at an event in primary school he broke the school record. All those days of throwing rocks and sticks at fruit in the trees in Grenada keeps paying off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">\u201cWe used to have races and say, \u2018Let\u2019s see who could pick the most,\u2019\u201d Peters said. \u201cI was pretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">Peters has to hurry back to school \u2014 he has two big tests this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">Any chance his gold medal might help him buy some extra time with his professors?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">\u201cThat\u2019s not going to help,\u201d Peters said, laughing. \u201cAs a kid, I was thinking about becoming a world champion and an Olympic champion and having the titles at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">One down, one to go next summer at the Tokyo Games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">EUGENE ON DECK<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">Oregon Gov. Kate Brown was in the stadium to present the men\u2019s 4&#215;100 relay medals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">In two years, the\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/worldathleticschamps.com\/oregon21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">renovated Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon<\/a>\u00a0, will be the site of worlds. It marks the first time the championships are heading to the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">\u201cWe\u2019re absolutely honored,\u201d Brown said. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing it\u2019s going to be in the heart of track and field territory \u2014 Eugene, Oregon. We\u2019re excited to see everyone there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">EMPTY STEP<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">Three steps on the podium, but only two teams. A chaotic changeover in the women\u2019s 4&#215;400 relay led to more than an hour of uncertainty.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1470255291270-1\" class=\"DFPSlot c0143 c016\" data-key=\"ad-placeholder\" data-google-query-id=\"CPq4tb-eiuUCFYNjwQod8-YLKw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_15786418\/APNews\/site\/article\/midarticle2_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">Jamaica finished third, then was disqualified, then reinstated. After all that, the Jamaican squad didn\u2019t turn up for its medal ceremony, leaving the gold medalists from the U.S. and second-placed Poland to take a lopsided podium photo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">At issue was whether Jamaica had gained an advantage by not lining up correctly for a changeover. Fourth-placed Britain argued the Jamaicans had benefited, but that was later overturned on an appeal by Jamaica.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">CENTROWITZ &amp;amp; SALAZAR<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">American distance runner Matthew Centrowitz said leaving Alberto Salazar\u2019s training group last season had nothing to do with an investigation and more to do with needing a change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0144 c0139\">Salazar was kicked out of the world championships last week after being handed a four-year ban in a case long pursued by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.
