The Caribbean Natural Resources Limited\u00a0(CANARI)\u00a0has awarded four persons\u00a0who participated in its cell phone video competition, \u201cEcosystems of\u00a0Grenada- past, present and future.\u201d<\/p>\n

The four\u00a0videos\u00a0highlighted\u00a0different\u00a0changes\u00a0to particular eco-systems\u00a0in Grenada and Carriacou\u00a0and the need for\u00a0increased\u00a0protection of the environment for future generations to enjoy.<\/p>\n

CANARI says\u00a0the majority of\u00a0entrants were from Carriacou so a decision was made to\u00a0award\u00a0two prizes to Carriacou and two prizes to Grenada, noting no videos were received from Petite Martinique.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0winners are as follows:<\/p>\n

Carriacou- Marvin Boatswain-Country Marine Ecosystem\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Marvin Boatswain of Carriacou in his\u00a0video<\/a>\u00a0says\u00a0he depends on the marine ecosystem of his country because he is a fisherman\u00a0and\u00a0provides\u00a0people on the island with food security.<\/p>\n

He says over the years a lot of degradation was seen in all the marine coastal habitats\u00a0and hopes in the future to see the restoration of the coral reefs and\u00a0seabeds.<\/p>\n

Carriacou- Javon Prime \u2013 Grenada Coral Reef Ecosystem\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Javon Prime\u2019s\u00a0video<\/a>\u00a0from Carriacou highlights the importance of the coral reefs in Grenada in providing a livelihood for fishermen\u00a0as well as serving as a tourist attraction.<\/p>\n

However, several participants in the video say\u00a0the beloved coral reefs are in danger from natural events such as storm\u00a0surges\u00a0and\u00a0hurricanes, global warming and human destruction.<\/p>\n

Grenada- Hayden Redhead- St John\u2019s Riverine Ecosystem\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Hayden Redhead of\u00a0Grenada\u00a0in\u00a0his\u00a0video<\/a>\u00a0says\u00a0over the past 10 years he has observed many changes to the\u00a0St John\u2019s riverine ecosystem including the mechanical\u00a0widening of the river\u00a0in an attempt to reduce flooding, a decrease in\u00a0biodiversity,\u00a0a\u00a0significant increase\u00a0in pollution\u00a0and\u00a0a\u00a0decrease in human activity such as fishing,\u00a0bathing and washing.<\/p>\n

Mr\u00a0Redhead says the quality of water has\u00a0also\u00a0decreased which would now be considered hazardous for consumption.<\/p>\n

Grenada- Raheem Smith-\u00a0Sautesse\u00a0Bay Ecosystem\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Raheem Smith says residents and businesses in the area depend on the Sauteurs Bay ecosystem in St Patrick, Grenada.<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0the\u00a0video<\/a>\u00a0shows the\u00a0lower part of the bay may not exist in the next 10 years\u00a0due to rising sea levels caused by climate change and the negative effects of the\u00a0breakwater<\/a>.<\/p>\n

CANARI says all four winners will be presented with an Amazon Gift voucher.<\/p>\n
