(NEW YORK POST) \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cStealth\u201d coronavirus cases are fueling the pandemic, with a staggering 86% of people infected walking around undetected, a new study says.<\/p>\n

Six of every seven cases \u2013 86% \u2014 were not reported in China before travel restrictions were implemented, driving the spread of the virus, according to a study Monday in the journal Science.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the undocumented infections which are driving the spread of the outbreak,\u201d said co-author Jeffrey Shaman of Columbia University Mailman School, according to GeekWire.<\/p>\n

Using computer modeling, researchers tracked infections before and after the Chinese city of Wuhan\u2019s travel ban.<\/p>\n

The findings indicated that these undocumented infections with no or mild symptoms \u2014 known as \u201cstealth\u201d cases \u2014 were behind two-thirds of the reported patients.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe majority of these infections are mild, with few symptoms at all,\u201d Shaman said, Mercury News reported. \u201cPeople may not recognize it. Or they think they have a cold.\u201d<\/p>\n

These \u201cstealth\u201d cases were then able to transmit the bug that could cause severe symptoms in other people, according to the researchers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will continue to present a major challenge to the containment of this outbreak going forward,\u201d Shaman said, adding that it underscores the importance of restrictions on movement in hard-hit regions.<\/p>\n
