SOURCE: AFP:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>WhatsAp<\/span>p on Tuesday placed new limits on message forwarding as part of an effort to curb the spread of misinformation about the coronavirus pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new policy limits users to forwarding certain messages to one \u201cchat\u201d at a time, aiming to\u00a0limit the rapid propagation of content which is provocative but likely to be false.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Facebook<\/span>-owned messaging platform said it took the action to enable people to concentrate on personal and private communications during the health crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n

In recent weeks, \u201cwe\u2019ve seen a significant increase in the amount of forwarding which users have told us can feel overwhelming and can contribute to the spread of misinformation,\u201d WhatsApp said in a blog post.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe it\u2019s important to slow the spread of these messages down to keep\u00a0<\/span>WhatsApp<\/span>\u00a0a place for personal conversation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year,<\/span>\u00a0WhatsApp<\/span> set\u00a0limits on forwarded messages\u00a0to five chats at a time, \u201cto constrain virality,\u201d responding to events in India where the rapid proliferation of unverified information led to mob violence.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new policy applies to messages forwarded \u201cmany times\u201d and marked with a double-arrow, indicating that it did not originate from a close contact, according to\u00a0<\/span>WhatsApp.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn effect, these messages are less personal compared to typical messages sent on\u00a0<\/span>WhatsApp<\/span>,\u201d the blog said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are now introducing a limit so that these messages can only be forwarded to one chat at a time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

WhatsApp<\/span>\u00a0along with its parent\u00a0<\/span>Facebook<\/span>\u00a0has been scrambling to curb an explosion of rumours and hoaxes about the coronavirus and at the same time seeking to promote verified content.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
