The Government of Grenada is moving aggressively to improve\u00a0 physical planning operations in the country.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister and Minister for Finance and Planning, Dr. the Right Honourable Keith\u00a0\u00a0Mitchell,\u00a0has stated that planning is a critical part of the country\u2019s development and it must\u00a0 be treated more seriously than it currently is.<\/p>\n
At a meeting Thursday with top officials associated with physical planning, Dr. Mitchell\u00a0 said, \u201cI am very concerned about the level of ad hoc and arbitrary building that is\u00a0 becoming prevalent across the country. Government will be moving quickly to examine\u00a0 the whole structure and make drastic changes. We must protect the integrity of our\u00a0 development process before it causes irreparable damage to our country.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell underscored the importance of achieving greater compliance with planning\u00a0 policies, regulations and notices. He said, \u201cWe must act quickly to provide more\u00a0 enforcement power with respect to physical planning. It is not acceptable that a stop\u00a0 notice is given and the contractor and\/or owner simply ignores this and continues building.\u00a0 That amounts to lawlessness; people cannot be ignoring the laws of the land.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Minister of Finance and Planning also cited discrepancies in the approval times and\u00a0 the historic stigma of corruption that has been attached to the Physical Planning Unit and\u00a0 the Planning Authority.<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell said, \u201cIt has been brought to my attention that some persons seeking\u00a0 permission to build wait several months for approval while other applications seem to be\u00a0 fast-tracked through the system. This is not right or fair. There must be equity in the\u00a0 approval process. Relatedly, we must also move quickly to change the historic perception\u00a0 that there is corruption in Grenada\u2019s physical planning process. We must have suitably\u00a0 qualified persons to undertake the work and they must operate within the ambit of the law\u00a0 and must be held accountable for their actions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell acknowledged the improvements made with respect to addressing the\u00a0 backlog of applications but he stressed the need to continue finding ways to improve the\u00a0 overall planning function.<\/p>\n
One of the imminent changes will be the establishment of a Physical Planning and\u00a0 Development Control Authority with responsibility for overseeing all planning and\u00a0 development matters, including environmental protection.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
