Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Right Honourable\u00a0\u00a0Keith Mitchell,\u00a0has welcomed Monday\u2019s announcement by Sandals that close to 600 team\u00a0 members have returned to work.<\/p>\n
Over the next few weeks, the workers will be trained in Sandals\u2019 Premium Protocols of\u00a0 Cleanliness, ahead of the planned re-opening of the luxury resort on October 1, 2020.\u00a0 The protocols, according to a Sandals press release, \u201censure the strictest health and\u00a0 hygiene guidelines and have allowed the company to successfully reopen several other\u00a0 resorts in Antigua, Jamaica, Saint Lucia and Barbados.\u201d<\/p>\n
At a meeting with top Sandals executives on Sunday, Dr. Mitchell was apprised of the\u00a0 hotel\u2019s plans and he welcomed the workers return to work.<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell said, \u201cThis is exciting news for Grenada. We look forward to the re-opening\u00a0 of the hotel and to resume welcoming visitors to our shores. This will largely signal the\u00a0 resumption of activity in the tourism sector, which has been particularly hard-hit by the\u00a0 COVID-19 pandemic. What is even more heart-warming is that hundreds of our nationals\u00a0 are returning the work, after six months. This is good news on a personal level for these\u00a0 employees, and for the suppliers of goods and services, who benefit indirectly from the\u00a0 hotel\u2019s operations. On a wider scale, it is also good news for the country and I am truly\u00a0 heartened by this announcement.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sandals executives have assured the Prime Minister that they are willing to share the\u00a0 hotel\u2019s well-established protocols with the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation to\u00a0 facilitate training for other hoteliers.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister applauded this initiative. He said, \u201cI commend Sandals\u2019 willingness to\u00a0 collaborate with other stakeholders in the industry. This would help create uniformity in\u00a0 standards. Together with the fact that Grenada currently has no active COVID-19 cases,\u00a0 this makes an ideal selling point for the country\u2019s tourism product.
