(LOOP NEWS) \u2013 Fifty-two per cent (52%) of the candidates who wrote the CSEC Mathematics examination for 2020 have passed.<\/p>\n
And this is, in fact, \u201ca slight improvement\u201d over 49 per cent passes in 2018 and \u201ca marked improvement\u201d over 2019 when some 46 per cent of candidates attained acceptable grades, according to the Director of Operations, Examination Services Division at\u00a0CXC, Nicole Manning.<\/p>\n
However, in speaking to\u00a0Loop News<\/em>\u00a0on the sidelines of the ceremony for the official release of the July 2020 Examinations Results, CXC Registrar and CEO Dr Wayne Wesley said:<\/p>\n \u201cWith having just over 50 per cent or\u00a052 per cent I think it was, we, certainly CXC would be concerned about students and\u00a0their preparation for these examinations.\u201d<\/p>\n Furthermore he added:<\/p>\n \u201c. . .50 per cent would not give us the kind of satisfaction that we would want to have as it relates to the development of the human capital within the region and as such we would definitely have to do some work to increase that number.\u201d<\/p>\n Way forward \u2013 Retraining and teaching teachers to teach Math\u00a0concepts creatively<\/strong><\/p>\n He said that 2020 presented unique circumstances but from this year\u2019s results, \u201cwhat we have recognised, is\u00a0that we will have to work closer with the teachers, particularly as it relates to the administration of SBAS, which is the Schools-Based Assessment component of our examinations to ensure that the students are grasping the concepts that they are supposed to be mastering, as well as looking at the resources that we make available through our learning hub for students to have access to information and to aid their preparation.\u201d<\/p>\n But Dr Wesley cautioned that improving\u00a0this statistic and at the same time reducing the\u00a0fail rate\u00a0will not happen overnight.<\/p>\n \u201cA lot will have to be done, so it\u2019s not just with the teachers, but perhaps working as well with our Teachers\u2019 Colleges to help with those new students coming in and the creation of seminars that will help to build and expand competencies of teachers in the delivery of these subjects.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" (LOOP NEWS) \u2013 Fifty-two per cent (52%) of the candidates who wrote the CSEC Mathematics examination for 2020 have passed.
