Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Right Honourable\u00a0\u00a0Keith Mitchell, says Grenada\u2019s recovery from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will\u00a0\u00a0depend to some extent on the level of activity generated by the Ministry of Infrastructure\u00a0\u00a0Development, Transport and Implementation.<\/p>\n
At a meeting last Friday with top officials of that ministry, Dr. Mitchell said, \u201cEconomic\u00a0\u00a0activity in the country depends heavily on construction and implementing projects under\u00a0\u00a0the Public Sector Investment Programme. In the absence of the traditional level of activity\u00a0\u00a0by key GDP contributors, Tourism and St. George\u2019s University, the key opportunities for\u00a0\u00a0economic activity in the short to medium term, will therefore be in construction, in both\u00a0\u00a0the public and private sectors.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister acknowledged the efforts being made by the Ministry to improve the\u00a0\u00a0rate of implementation and welcomed news that all strategic one-off projects are on\u00a0\u00a0schedule. He urged the incoming Minister for Infrastructure Development, Senator the\u00a0\u00a0Honourable Norland Cox to ensure that much focus is placed on this area.<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell said, \u201cThere is a tendency for things to become clogged up in the bureaucratic\u00a0\u00a0system. There must be a greater level of aggression as it relates to project\u00a0\u00a0implementation. Getting projects moving means putting people to work and in this\u00a0\u00a0particular climate, we must seek to generate economic activity as much as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the need for more engineers and other technical\u00a0\u00a0support staff and he referenced the Canada Resilience Facility, through which Grenada\u00a0\u00a0can seek support for staffing in technical areas such as engineering and energy.<\/p>\n
Minister Cox who has worked alongside this ministry on the implementation of various\u00a0\u00a0projects within his current portfolio, cited project management and resource allocation as\u00a0\u00a0two additional areas of focus that are critical to the ministry\u2019s overall performance.<\/p>\n
With respect to transport, the Prime Minister welcomed the ministry\u2019s efforts to develop a\u00a0\u00a0better rapport with stakeholders in the sector. The ministry has also already started a\u00a0\u00a0series of engagements with stakeholders including bus owners and drivers, taxi drivers\u00a0\u00a0and truckers.<\/p>\n
The series of ministry meetings continue this week, with the Prime Minister scheduled to\u00a0 meet officials from the Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts, Fisheries and\u00a0 Cooperatives; the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Climate Resilience and the\u00a0 Environment and the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development, Physical\u00a0 Development, Public Utilities and Energy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
