Prime Minister and Minister for National Security,\u00a0Dr. the Right\u00a0\u00a0Honourable Keith Mitchell, met with the leadership of the Royal Grenada Police Force\u00a0\u00a0this week to discuss several matters pertaining to the effective operation of the force and\u00a0\u00a0to obtain feedback on what Government can do to help enhance the work of police\u00a0officers.<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell commended several of the RGPF\u2019s initiatives including the formation of the\u00a0\u00a0Cold Case Unit, the introduction of the body cameras and the new thrust in community\u00a0\u00a0policing.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cCommunity policing is a critical aspect of your duty. It is well-known that\u00a0\u00a0community support and cooperation go a long way in helping to solve major crimes and\u00a0\u00a0therefore significant emphasis should be placed on fostering good relations within\u00a0\u00a0communities. The more we enhance community policing, the more effective the work of\u00a0\u00a0the police will be.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister also commended the rank and file of the RGPF for their ongoing\u00a0 commitment to maintaining law and order, particularly during the lockdown period that\u00a0 was instituted as part of the national strategy to combat the current COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
On the subject of marijuana, the Prime Minister said while Grenada has not yet taken a\u00a0\u00a0decision on changes to be made to the law, the country cannot be immune to the changes\u00a0\u00a0that are taking place globally.<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell said, \u201cI can tell you that we are looking at the laws, and legislation will be\u00a0\u00a0brought to parliament to give effect to a new policy. I assure you that the process of\u00a0\u00a0change will involve public consultation.\u201d<\/p>\n
At the meeting, the Prime Minister and Minister\u00a0for National Security\u00a0also expressed\u00a0concern about the recent series of events involving the shooting of one young man,\u00a0followed days later by his father attacking and injuring two police officers. Tragically, the\u00a0\u00a0father was shot by police during the attack and later succumbed to his injuries.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister wished the injured officers a speedy recovery and he has privately\u00a0\u00a0extended condolences to the family of the deceased. He also\u00a0commended the Acting\u00a0 Commissioner of Police for his outreach to the family of the deceased and the sensitivity\u00a0 displayed.<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell noted that maintaining safety and security in the current context requires\u00a0\u00a0additional responsibility and behaviour modification.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cI encourage police officers to be vigilant but to also use their discretion. A police\u00a0\u00a0officer is not only a law enforcer, but must also function as a psychologist and a diplomat.\u00a0\u00a0Therefore, the approach to duty must demonstrate a combination of these roles and their\u00a0\u00a0applicability in different situations.\u00a0In discharging your duties as enforcers of the law,\u00a0 officers should use their own judgment. I am not saying to disregard the provisions of the\u00a0 law; I am saying that judgment needs to be part of the equation.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister and Minister for National Security told the RGPF hierarchy, he has\u00a0\u00a0been questioned in recent public meetings about police officers abusing their powers.<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell said, \u201cIt is critical for me to balance my responsibility as Minister for National\u00a0\u00a0Security. It will be irresponsible to do anything that sends the message that police officers\u00a0\u00a0are less than effective or responsible in discharging their responsibilities. At the same\u00a0\u00a0time, police officers must be aware that they have a responsibility to act in a manner that\u00a0\u00a0will protect the image of the police force.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister ended his contribution to the meeting by encouraging officers to\u00a0 continue doing the best job they can and assuring them that Government will continue to\u00a0 ensure that the necessary resources are provided to facilitate the effective operation of\u00a0 the RGPF.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
