The Government of Grenada has joined hands with Spice Isle Fish\u00a0\u00a0House Limited and the Southern Fishermen Association Inc to bring much needed repairs\u00a0\u00a0to the Grand Mal jetty.<\/p>\n
The project entails the replacement of damaged concrete slabs on the jetty which create\u00a0a potential hazard for the safe landing of fish. Over the weekend, phase one of the project\u00a0\u00a0was completed, with 12 of the damaged slabs being replaced. Another forty slabs will be\u00a0\u00a0custom-built and replaced in the coming months.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister, Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell, who\u2019s also the parliamentary\u00a0\u00a0representative for the area, visited the project site on Saturday. He was accompanied by\u00a0\u00a0General Manager of Spice Isle Fish House, Mr. James Ince and Mr. Charles Radix, a\u00a0\u00a0member of the board of the Southern Fishermen Association.<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell said, \u201cI am happy to see the work being done on this jetty because there have\u00a0\u00a0been complaints about its conditions for some time now. What is notable about this and\u00a0which is also the model we would like to see happening more in the country, is the\u00a0\u00a0cooperation between the private sector and Government.\u201d<\/p>\n
The project is jointly funded by the Government which is contributing $200,000 and the\u00a0\u00a0Southern Fishermen Association and Spice Isle Fish House which are collectively\u00a0\u00a0investing $100,000.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister said Government was considering financing the project in totality but\u00a0\u00a0when Mr. Ince came forward with the proposal to invest a sizeable sum, the initiative was\u00a0\u00a0welcomed.<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell said, \u201cMr. Ince recognises that as an investor in the area, the livelihood of the\u00a0\u00a0people is also very important. I therefore went to Cabinet seeking support for the project\u00a0\u00a0and it was agreed that Government would contribute to ensuring the project\u2019s completion.\u00a0\u00a0This is the type of partnership that will help to further advance the country\u2019s development.\u201d<\/p>\n
Both Mr. Ince and Mr. Radix commended Dr. Mitchell and the Grenada Government for\u00a0\u00a0agreeing to jointly execute the long-awaited project. They also gave assurances that their\u00a0\u00a0respective organisations are committed to ongoing engagement that will promote and\u00a0\u00a0advance the fisheries sector in Grenada.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister also affirmed Government\u2019s commitment to restructuring the fishing\u00a0\u00a0sector, including making changes in the administration and leadership, and possibly in\u00a0\u00a0some cases, bringing in new people with fresh ideas to help the fishermen. He said, \u201cThe\u00a0\u00a0fisheries sector is an important sector for the country because of the amount of people<\/p>\n
who rely on it for their livelihood. It is therefore in Government\u2019s interest to do what it can\u00a0\u00a0to maximise the potential of the sector.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell also acknowledged that some associations are plagued by problems and it is\u00a0\u00a0Government\u2019s intention to do whatever it can to bring harmony and a spirit of cooperation\u00a0\u00a0to the associations for the benefit of the entire sector and the country as a whole.<\/p>\n
The Minister of Fisheries will host a series of meetings with the various associations to\u00a0\u00a0examine their structure and operation and explore ways to improve operational efficiency\u00a0\u00a0and effectiveness.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
