Prime Minister, Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell, has\u00a0expressed gratitude to Cuba for its valuable assistance in boosting Grenada\u2019s capacity to\u00a0\u00a0fight the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
Addressing the Cuban President and fellow regional leaders during the 7th\u00a0Cuba CARICOM Summit on Tuesday, Dr. Mitchell said, \u201cDespite facing its own challenges with\u00a0 the COVID-19 pandemic, Cuba assisted Grenada in our national response. Cuba was\u00a0 quite generous through the provision of specialised nurses in infectious diseases and\u00a0 specialist physicians, particularly in the intensive care specialty. I take this opportunity to\u00a0 publicly thank our Cuban brothers and sisters for their continued support.<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell also acknowledged the assistance provided by Cuba in a number of other\u00a0 areas, and expressed a desire to see deepened cooperation between the two countries.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cOur long-standing collaboration with Cuba in the multilateral arena provides a\u00a0 clear demonstration of our dedication to regional and hemispheric integration. Further,\u00a0 Grenada\u2019s bilateral relationship with Cuba is characterised by mutual respect and\u00a0 cooperation in many areas including, health, education, engineering and architecture.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister cited climate change and disaster mitigation as other areas of critical\u00a0 support provided by Cuba. He told the gathering of regional leaders, \u201cThere are countless\u00a0 examples of Cuba being a great friend to our country in particular, and the region as a\u00a0 whole. Tremendous support has been extended to our countries, in the preparation for,\u00a0 and in the aftermath of natural disasters. Cuba must be commended for its excellent\u00a0 disaster prevention programme, which has long been applauded by the international\u00a0 community. Grenada looks forward to continuous learning from our colleagues in Cuba\u00a0 in this particular area.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the subject of the financial, economic and trade embargo imposed by the United\u00a0 States against Cuba, Dr. Mitchell said, \u201cGrenada, like the rest of CARICOM, does not\u00a0 support this blockade and we will continue to support Cuba in its quest for it to end. Each<\/p>\n
year, Grenada stresses the counter-productivity of this action and the hardship it imposes\u00a0 on the Cuban people, causing them to be unfairly marginalised.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also expressed the hope that the incoming administration in the United States will\u00a0 restart the process to lift the embargo. \u201cWith the recent elections in the United States, we\u00a0 do hope that from January 2021, there will be a serious turn of events. With CARICOM\u2019s\u00a0 initiative, we will work towards getting this blockade ended as fast as possible, since it\u00a0 was in fact the same Democratic administration that started the process of serious re\u00a0engagement with Cuba.\u201d<\/p>\n
The CARICOM-Cuba Summit was held on the occasion of CARICOM-Cuba Day and the\u00a0 Prime Minister concluded by expressing a desire to see the advancement and well-being\u00a0 of the people of Cuba and the region as a whole.<\/p>\n
