The Government of Grenada has advised the\u00a0 management of the Grenada Gravel Concrete and Emulsion Production Corporation to\u00a0 initiate a meeting with representatives of Grenada Technical and Allied Workers Union\u00a0 (TAWU), which represents workers there.<\/p>\n
Workers at the corporation downed tools on Thursday to demand the payment of the\u00a0 annual profit-sharing.<\/p>\n
According to the collective bargaining agreement between the corporation and TAWU,\u00a0 permanent employees are expected to benefit from 15% of the company\u2019s annual pre-tax\u00a0 profits while contract staff receive one month\u2019s salary.<\/p>\n
The corporation did in fact record a profit during 2019, the year on which this year\u2019s profit\u00a0 sharing will be based. However, with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the\u00a0 closure of business operations during the period of lockdown, the company faced a\u00a0 significant reduction in income, while at the same time, continuing to pay workers\u00a0 throughout the period of inactivity.<\/p>\n
Additionally, millions of dollars have been invested in capital expenditure, purchasing new\u00a0 equipment and refurbishing or upgrading existing machinery with a view to improving the\u00a0 corporation\u2019s capacity and the efficiency of its operations.<\/p>\n
With the pandemic creating a very uncertain business environment, based on its\u00a0 widespread impact, there are serious concerns that the payment of bonuses could impact\u00a0 the corporation\u2019s future cash flow, jeopardise jobs and offset further capital expenditure\u00a0 plans to enhance operational efficiency.<\/p>\n
Government believes urgent dialogue between the corporation\u2019s management and the\u00a0 union representatives should examine the situation, with a view to determining the\u00a0 medium to long-term impact of profit-sharing this year and a more responsible timeline\u00a0 that will satisfy the needs of all concerned.<\/p>\n
Government notes that the dispute over profit-sharing comes at a time when hundreds of\u00a0 other workers across the country, have been on the breadline since the onset of the\u00a0 pandemic in Grenada.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
