The Government of Grenada is providing clarity on the\u00a0 current State of Emergency and the Emergency Powers (COVID-19) Regulations, which\u00a0 includes a curfew between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m daily.<\/p>\n
Erroneous reports in a television newscast on Monday have created some confusion\u00a0 among members of the public regarding the duration of the curfew.<\/p>\n
Providing clarity on the matter, Attorney General Dia Forrester explained that, \u201cIn keeping\u00a0 with Section 17 of the Constitution, the initial proclamation by the Governor General, when\u00a0 parliament is not sitting, lapses 21-days from the date of publication, unless approved by\u00a0 both Houses of Parliament. Subsequent to the Governor General\u2019s proclamation, the\u00a0 Lower House met on 15th\u00a0January 2021 and approved the resolution.\u201d<\/p>\n
When the Senate meets later this month, members will consider the resolution, already\u00a0 approved by their parliamentary colleagues. Once both Houses of Parliament approve\u00a0 the resolution, the proclamation of 11th\u00a0January, 2021 will remain valid for a maximum of\u00a0 six months.<\/p>\n
Both the Governor General and the Houses of Parliament have the discretion to revoke\u00a0 the proclamation in accordance with the provisions of Sections 17(3), (4) and (5) of the\u00a0 Constitution prior to that six-month period lapsing. Such revocation will be provided as\u00a0 early as the circumstances permit, in the best interest of the public and public safety.<\/p>\n
It is during this period that the COVID-19 Regulations, which contains a curfew amongst\u00a0 other matters, are applicable. However, the actual enforcement, adjustment or removal\u00a0 of the curfew and other matters arising in the COVID-19 Regulations will depend on\u00a0 prevailing conditions.<\/p>\n
The Attorney General explained that, \u201cThe Regulations are under constant review and\u00a0 will be amended periodically with the consistent aim of ensuring public health and safety.\u00a0 We thank everyone for the continued sacrifices being made and compliance with the\u00a0 Regulations as we all perform our civic duty aimed at keeping each other safe.\u201d<\/p>\n
As the nature of this pandemic changes and the threat to lives evolve, the Government\u00a0 must continue to take steps in the best interest of the public. The public is reminded to\u00a0 adhere to the COVID-19 protocols, maintain physical distance, wear a mask, especially\u00a0 when physical distancing cannot be maintained, avoid large gatherings and regularly\u00a0 wash or sanitise hands.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
