The tri-island nation is working with\u00a0 the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) to develop a public private sector partnership\u00a0 to reduce marine waste coming from pleasure vessels such as yachts.<\/p>\n<p>The project dubbed \u2018<i>Integrating Water, Land and Ecosystem Management in the Caribbean\u00a0 for Small Island Developing States\u2019,\u00a0<\/i>will examine Grenada and Carriacou\u2019s current capacity\u00a0 and create research-based solutions to deal with waste in an eco-friendly manner.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Grenada is set to implement a Marine Waste Management policy with\u00a0 amendments to the existing legislation and the introduction of accompanying regulations.\u00a0 This policy is aimed at setting up a management system for marine waste management,\u00a0 including monitoring, funding, penalties and cost structures. Confident that this is a positive\u00a0 action to manage Grenada\u2019s fisheries sustainably, Permanent Secretary (Ag.) wrf Fisheries and\u00a0 Co-operatives in the Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts, Fisheries &amp; Co-operatives Mr.\u00a0 Michael Stephen stated, \u201cGrenada is an International Maritime Organization (IMO) member\u00a0 and will comply with measures to improve the safety and security of international shipping\u00a0 and to prevent marine pollution from ships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Grenada Ports Authority (GPA) is the country\u2019s focal point for international maritime\u00a0 matters falling under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The\u00a0 General Manager, Mr. Carlyle Felix, affirmed, \u201cThe Grenada Ports Authority reiterates its\u00a0 support for the proposed policy and looks forward to a timely adoption of the IMO\u2019s\u00a0 Caribbean Small Commercial Vessels Code. We are convinced that its adoption will promote\u00a0 cleaner seas, which is one of the pillars of an ocean based economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of these important steps in marine waste management, Permanent Secretary in the\u00a0 Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Climate Resilience and the Environment Ms. Desiree\u00a0 Stephen says, \u201cGrenada is a geo tourism destination in which the marine environment is\u00a0significant to the livelihoods of many Grenadians, for fishing, diving, Tourism and recreation.\u00a0 Taking these important steps now will ensure that future generations will be able to reap\u00a0 economic and other benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To support these and other activities in the local yachting sector including destination\u00a0 marketing is the newly formed Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA) Subcommittee on Yachting.\u00a0 The members are Karen Stiell, representing the Marine and Yachting Association of Grenada\u00a0 (MAYAG), Nicholas George representing Sportfishing, Charlotte Fairhead representing\u00a0 Camper &amp; Nicholson Port Louis Marina and GTA Nautical Development Manager Nikoyan\u00a0 Roberts.
