Grenada\u2019s Prime Minister, Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell\u00a0 is encouraging the creation of new business partnerships as part of the region\u2019s\u00a0 response to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
Addressing members of the regional private sector during the Virtual Caribbean Business\u00a0 Forum on Wednesday, Dr. Mitchell said these partnerships should help to cultivate a spirit\u00a0 of entrepreneurship in members of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States\u00a0 (OECS).<\/p>\n
Noting that trade is vitally important to the survival of regional countries, Dr. Mitchell\u00a0 acknowledged the many challenges brought about by the pandemic and affirmed that in\u00a0 every sector, there are \u201cunprecedented opportunities\u201d.<\/p>\n
The Grenadian leader said, \u201cThese challenges carry the seeds of great opportunity and\u00a0 we are particularly pleased with this chance to exchange views and brainstorm on\u00a0 concrete measures and initiatives that we can undertake together to help us all be more\u00a0 resilient, less dependent on externalities and shape a new model of collective prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Offering further words of encouragement to the participants in the online forum, Dr.\u00a0 Mitchell said, \u201cLet us identify the many windows that the pandemic has opened for us to\u00a0 do things differently, to do things better, using the foundations that already exist to build\u00a0 the architecture of the New Normal. We know that in the spaces created by the global\u00a0 economic pause, we can and must rapidly create a more dynamic, self-reliant Caribbean\u00a0 market place.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Dr. Mitchell, \u201cThe OECS Authority is keen to seen an explosion of trade\u00a0 between the OECS and the wider Caribbean, starting with Trinidad and Tobago.\u201d He\u00a0 highlighted linkages among regional ferry services and agricultural producers and\u00a0 innovative approaches to financing micro, small and medium sized enterprises as\u00a0 examples of partnership possibilities.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister also noted that, \u201cRegional integration as an enabler of reciprocity in\u00a0 relations and the aggregation of opportunity in niche CARICOM and hemispheric spaces,\u00a0 is essential for our sustainability.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell lamented the fact that regional trade has not been optimised. He said, \u201cWe\u00a0 seem to prefer patronising other people\u2019s business in the global village instead of\u00a0 strengthening and consolidating the wealth of our islands, through stronger business ties\u00a0 among each other and interacting with the global village from a position of consolidated\u00a0 strength. Why do we see nothing wrong with importing food and goods from all around\u00a0 the globe, but express objection and erect barriers to buying from our own? Sisters and\u00a0 brothers, something is fundamentally wrong with that approach.\u201d<\/p>\n
Notwithstanding the existing challenges, the Prime Minister sees many opportunities in\u00a0 the new normal. He identified some of these as the reconfiguration of trading relationships\u00a0 by accelerating efforts to address impediment to integration; developing greater\u00a0 reciprocity of relations and actions; securing the foundation that exists through building\u00a0 blocks such as the Caribbean Court of Justice and consolidating the eco-system of\u00a0 policies, regulations and protocols that facilitate trade and business.<\/p>\n
