Harvey Vale and Hillsborough Government School in Carriacou,\u00a0 officially opened the doors to its brand new libraries on Friday April 23rd, 2021.<\/p>\n
The two primary schools were the first to receive new libraries from GND Schools Incorporated (GSI), since the organization resumed the roll out of its library development initiative. This is\u00a0 following a closure from March-October, 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19.<\/p>\n
GSI presented a newly constructed 625 square foot library to Harvey Vale Government School.\u00a0 Hillsborough Government School received a beautifully renovated library space with\u00a0 infrastructural upgrades. Each school library features brand new furnishings and a collection of\u00a0 over one thousand new books.<\/p>\n
The library at Harvey Vale Government School was accepted by the Principal, Ms. Thereia\u00a0 Lendore, during the official handing over ceremony. She thanked GSI for the thoughtful gift, which she said will help the school to achieve its existing pledge, to develop good readers.<\/p>\n
Representing the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Senior Administrative\u00a0 Officer, Dr. Vernesta Noel Smart, endorsed GSI\u2019s initiative. She expressed that the new library will present an opportunity to foster a knowledge driven community.<\/p>\n
During the official handing over ceremony of the Hillsborough Government School Library,\u00a0 Principal Barbara Charles praised GSI for the addition of the valuable resource which she\u00a0 believes will become the cornerstone of the community and the surrounding villages.<\/p>\n
District Education Officer for Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Rosalina Lendore, spoke at both\u00a0 launches. She extended heartfelt appreciation to GSI for its partnership with the Ministry of\u00a0 Education and for investing in the future of the nation\u2019s children.<\/p>\n
Also applauding the efforts of GSI was Ms. Rholda Quamina, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs.<\/p>\n
In her remarks on behalf of GSI, Mrs. Denyse Brathwaite expressed well wishes from Chief\u00a0 Executive Officer at GSI, Mrs. Andrea Phillip. Mrs. Phillip, unfortunately, was unable to attend\u00a0 the events.<\/p>\n
Recognition was also given to supporting donors, Dan and Jane Lazenby of the United Kingdom. They donated twenty thousand pounds, which was used towards the Harvey Vale and\u00a0 Hillsborough Government School Library Projects.<\/p>\n
A total of twenty-five (25) school libraries have been successfully completed and launched in\u00a0 public, primary schools across the state of Grenada since the inception of GSI\u2019s literacy\u00a0 development project, which began six years ago.<\/p>\n
The opening of the two latest school libraries in Carraciou marks a significant milestone for GSI.\u00a0 For the third time in the organization\u2019s history, two libraries have been launched in one day.<\/p>\n
The Library Development Programme is part of GSI\u2019s continuing thrust to enhance the literacy\u00a0 development of the nation\u2019s primary school students. This is being accomplished through its\u00a0 \u201cB.I.G. Vision\u201d of\u00a0B<\/b>uilding Libraries,\u00a0I<\/b>ncreasing Educational Achievement and\u00a0G<\/b>rowing\u00a0 Learners.<\/p>\n
GND Schools Inc. is collaborating with the Government of Grenada, through the Ministry of\u00a0 Education, Human Resource Development, Religious Affairs & Information. Support is given by main donors, Michael and Melanie Sherwood of the United Kingdom along with local trustees: Leo Garbutt of the Calabash Hotel, Lyden Ramdhanny and Jason Roberts.<\/p>\n
