{"id":8688,"date":"2021-05-27T09:14:22","date_gmt":"2021-05-27T13:14:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drealfmgrenada.com\/?p=8688"},"modified":"2021-05-27T09:14:22","modified_gmt":"2021-05-27T13:14:22","slug":"world-may-breach-1-5c-warming-within-5-years-wmo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drealfmgrenada.com\/index.php\/2021\/05\/27\/world-may-breach-1-5c-warming-within-5-years-wmo\/","title":{"rendered":"World May Breach 1.5C Warming Within 5 Years \u2014 WMO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS,\u00a0France\u00a0(AFP) \u2014 The world may temporarily breach the 1.5-Celsius warming mark within the next five years, according to an updated assessment of global climate trends released Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The World Meterological Organization and Britain&#8217;s Met Office said there was a 40 per cent chance of the annual average global temperature surpassing 1.5C above pre-industrial temperatures \u2014 the aspirational warming limit of the Paris climate accord.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Met Office&#8217;s updated global 10-year climate prediction, there is a 90 per cent chance of at least one year between 2021-2025 being the hottest on record.<\/p>\n<p>The annual average global temperature over the next five years is likely to be at least 1C warmer than pre-industrial levels, within a range of 0.9C-1.8C warmer, it said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These are more than just statistics,&#8221; said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Increasing temperatures mean more melting ice, higher sea levels, more heatwaves and other extreme weather, and greater impacts on food security, health, the environment and sustainable development.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The landmark 2015 Paris climate deal saw nations commit to limit global temperature rises to &#8220;well below&#8221; 2C above pre-industrial levels.<\/p>\n<p>The accord strives towards a safer cap of 1.5C, but pledges made by nations under the Paris accord to date leave Earth on the path to warming roughly twice as much by the end of the century.<\/p>\n<p>Experts greeted Thursday&#8217;s announcement with caution.<\/p>\n<p>Joeri Rogelj, director of research\u00a0at the Grantham Institute at\u00a0Imperial College London, said a single year above 1.5C would not mean the Paris goals had been breached.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But this is nevertheless\u00a0very\u00a0bad news,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It tells\u00a0us once again that climate action to date is wholly insufficient and emissions need to be reduced urgently to zero to halt global warming.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8216;Inevitable&#8217; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>The Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update, released on Thursday, showed that the chance of breaching 1.5C had roughly doubled compared to a similar assessment made last year.<\/p>\n<p>The WMO said this increase was largely down to improved datasets used to predict temperatures, rather than a sudden increase in the rate of warming.<\/p>\n<p>It said the new assessment showed an increased likelihood of tropical cyclones in the Atlantic, as well as increased rainfall in high-latitude regions and the Sahel compared with the recent past.<\/p>\n<p>Ed Hawkings, climate research scientist at the University of Reading, said Thursday&#8217;s assessment was &#8220;an indication that we are fast approaching the temperature levels that the Paris Agreement aims to avoid&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He said that some months in 2016 \u2014 the hottest year on record \u2014 had already breached the 1.5C warming mark.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As global temperatures continue to rise, it is inevitable that we will continue to temporarily cross 1.5C before we exceed it for more sustained periods,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To limit global warming to 1.5C \u2014 or what the parties to the Paris Agreement thought 1.5C meant when they signed it \u2014 we need to hit the brakes on emissions now and stop global warming in the next 30 years or so,&#8221; said Myles Allen, professor of geosystem science at the University of Oxford.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That hasn&#8217;t changed, apart from the fact that five years have passed since Paris and we are still only talking about hitting the brakes.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>PARIS,\u00a0France\u00a0(AFP) \u2014 The world may temporarily breach the 1.5-Celsius warming mark within the next five years, according to an updated assessment of global climate trends released Thursday.
