This is aimed at developing a better <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">understanding of key agronomic practices that can contribute and lead to increased <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">production and improved qualities of the fruit, to help the country to maintain the current <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">export market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">An engagement of stakeholders \u2013 farmers, extension officers and exporters \u2013 was held <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">on Thursday 10th June ,in St. Andrew by the Ministry. The session provided relevant <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">information on agronomic practices that must be utilised &#8211; from propagation to <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">harvesting and marketing \u2013 to have a viable soursop Industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">Senior Agricultural Officer, Lauren St. Louis, said, \u201cThis is an opportunity for us to <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">assist our farmers to better their livelihoods, improve their cultural practices and to <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">boost the economy,\u201d as she reminded stakeholders that Grenada has a unique <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">opportunity, as it is the only country which can export fresh soursop to the US Market; a <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">unique market position that it can continue to capitalize on and fully exploit the demand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lauren St Louis  on Soursop training and Production.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CzuB1nE4eXU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN\">Following up on research and development in other countries and the use of science <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">and technology for Soursop Production, Chief Agronomist , Allison Haynes, identified a <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">number of critical areas that farmers must get right . These included the incorporation of <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">important macro and secondary nutrients during the lifecycle of a soursop tree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN\"> She <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">explained to stakeholders,\u201d Nitrogen and Potassium are nutrients that soursop like; <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">these are things we must incorporate to improve our quality; these are also important <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">for size and taste as well. Calcium is also important as well, for the formation of the cell <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">walls in fruits and curing injuries; so these are things we must consider when fertilising <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">our trees.\u201d <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">Presentations were also made by the Supervisor for the Northern Agricultural District, <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">Maximus Lazarus, and Francis Noel focusing on Land Preparation and Pest and <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">Disease management respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThis session is our way of giving greater attention to the Soursop sector; That is why <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">we have looked today at areas suitable for soursop production-spacing of the plot 18 X <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">18 , layout of the field and intercropping; we want to ensure that all the farmers are <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">producing Soursop that is marketable,\u201d Lazarus said. <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">\u201d Soursop is a very lucrative crop but farmers have to be aware of the pests and disease <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">and control measures, so we can take advantage of the market we have,\u201d said Noel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN\">The Ministry is hopeful that the practical demonstrations made to stakeholders during <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">the training will be implemented in various phases of Soursop production, to increase <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">production levels and increase quality of the fruit, to help the country maintain the <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">current market demands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">The Ministry of Agriculture, Lands and Forestry, continues to provide technical support <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">to farmers through the extension department ; duty- free concessions on agri-puts and <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">vehicles for agricultural purposes ; the technical guide on Soursop Production that has <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">also been developed for farmers and gardeners; along with thousands of Soursop <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">plants that will be available for sale at subsidized costs of $2.00 per plant , during the <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">annual plant distribution season next month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>The Ministry of Agriculture, Lands and Forestry, has extended efforts to train farmers and technical staff in Soursop Production.
