Thirty-three ( 33 ) year old L\u2019Amour Douglas and his wife Jayleen sees the adaptation of <\/span>new technologies as a way of maximising production on their farm, increasing their <\/span>markets, as well as providing food that is \u201calways fresh,\u201d for their customers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom was the one who started farming; upon completing my education, I joined her <\/span>to continue our family business,\u201d said L\u2019Amour, the son of well-known farmer, Daul <\/span>Douglas, of Douglas Farms Limited, St. Andrew. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Douglas Farms Limited supplies a wide variety of local produce. Using well-tested <\/span>agronomic practices, like drip irrigation, plastic mulch and crop treatment at an early <\/span>stage, corn, bodi beans, pumpkin, watermelons, and sweet potatoes are among those <\/span>that can be purchased from the business.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the farming day can become busy managing 6.5 acres, L\u2019Amour and Jayleen <\/span>have developed an equilibrium.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe get to the farm as early as we can; if it is a harvesting day, I will start harvesting, <\/span>while he would start the pumps. Once we are finished harvesting and we complete the <\/span>basic stuff on the farm like adding manure or weeding, we deliver produce. I would do <\/span>the books and he will come back to the farm to work;\u201d said Jayleen, a mother of one.<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u2019Amour identified his two major challenges: \u201conce the rain falls, we cannot do anything <\/span>at the back, because of waterlogging and praedial larceny; we have been losing about <\/span>100 lbs. of soursop a week because of thieves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They plan to include technological advancements such as the use of fertigators to <\/span>modernise the operation of the farm and improve their sales and marketing. Jayleen, <\/span>who has worked in both the public and private sectors before joining her husband as a <\/span>farmer, is responsible for marketing at Douglas Farms.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWe sell to Real Value, Marketing Board, Foodland, local vendors, and little <\/span>supermarkets that we are familiar with and have built a relationship with,\u201d Jayleen <\/span>Remarked.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>This, she says, is coupled with good business management practices, such as record <\/span>keeping.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is all about keeping record; once a sale is made or we make a payment, we keep all <\/span>those records. We also ensure that our monies are banked properly, and we treat <\/span>farming as a business,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Both Jayleen and L\u2019Amour are supportive of the ideology of youth in agriculture. \u201cIt is <\/span>what brings food on the table and keeps food on the table. Yes, it is profitable, but you <\/span>have to be passionate about it to make your business successful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
