ST. GEORGE, GRENADA –<\/strong> Grenada will create history when the Spice Isle competes in the 2020 International Paralympic Games opening in Tokyo, Japan, from August 24 to September 05, 2021.<\/div>\n

The Paralympic Games, which are staged immediately after the Summer Olympics in the same city and using the same venues, will feature more than 5000 athletes and officials from more than 150 nations in two weeks of competition.<\/div>\n
–<\/div>\n
Grenada will be represented by two athletes, Ishona Stacy-Ann Charles<\/span><\/a> in the women’s javelin and Ny\u00e8 Cruickshank in swimming. The Team Manager\/Chief of Mission is Kwame Hypolite who is the Vice President of the Grenada Paralympics Committee.<\/div>\n

Javelin thrower Ishona Charles is Grenada’s first Para-athlete to compete internationally, participating in the 2018 Desert Challenge Games in Arizona where she won the Gold medal in the Javelin. She subsequently participated in the 2019 World Para-Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar; and earlier this year returned to the Desert Challenge Games in Arizona, where she won a Silver medal.<\/div>\n

Nye Chrickshank made her international debut in the World Para-Swimming World Series in Lewisville, Texas in April 2021. The 19-year-old is the first local swimmer to compete in an international Para-swimming championship.<\/div>\n

The Paralympic Games is the premier event for physically challenged athletes from around the world.<\/div>\n

In a press release, the Grenada Paralympics Committee said it is delighted to have Grenadian Para-athletes representing the Spice Isle at the highest level of international competition and hope that it will inspire the nation’s physically challenged, in particular the young boys and girls, to get involved in all sports.<\/div>\n

The Committee urges Grenadians to take time and look at the performances of the World Para-athletes and challenge parents and the nation to become a champion in the promotion of sports for all.<\/div>\n
–<\/div>\n
The Paralympics Committee says it is grateful to the International Paralympic Committee, host nation Japan, the Grenada Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Sports for supporting the team’s participation.<\/div>\n

The Chief of Mission of the team will travel to Japan on Monday, August 16, while the other members will join him later in the week.<\/div>\n
