Through funding from the Global\u00a0 Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is\u00a0 implementing the Climate Resilient Agriculture for Integrated Landscape Management\u00a0 Project in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands and Forestry.<\/p>\n
In August, the GEF\/UNDP Climate- Resilient Agriculture Project provided field\u00a0 demonstration and practical hands-on experience in the development and maintenance\u00a0 of check dams and gully plugs, using natural materials, as effective erosion control\u00a0 structures. Over 35 persons, including 20 women, participated in this demonstration\u00a0 activity, which took place within the Grand Etang Forest Reserves.<\/p>\n
Increased rainy periods are typically associated with increased soil erosion on hillsides and nature-based solutions (NbS) offer solutions to societal challenges and\u00a0 environmental degradation issues through working with nature. The concept of using\u00a0 NbS is grounded in the knowledge that healthy natural and managed ecosystems\u00a0 produce a diverse range of services on which human wellbeing depends, including\u00a0 measures to reduce soil erosion, promote landscape stability, and support integrated\u00a0 watershed management.<\/p>\n
UNDP\u2019s Sustainable Land Management (SLM) Specialist, Aiden Forteau, and members\u00a0 of the Forestry Division of the Ministry of Agriculture supported the participants in\u00a0 knowledge development through key activities, including identification of slopes and\u00a0 hillsides affected by high-velocity erosion flows; determination of appropriate site and\u00a0 distancing for development of check dams along the slopes and gullies; determination\u00a0 of the type of natural materials, such as stone, wood and foliage, for implementation\u00a0 and maintenance of check dams; and construction and maintenance of check dams.<\/p>\n
According to Forteau, check dams can be used where temporary channels or\u00a0 permanent channels are not yet vegetated; channel lining is infeasible, and velocity\u00a0 checks are required. The appropriate use of the check dam will serve to limit erosion by\u00a0 reducing flow in small open channels. This approach is typically suitable for use of\u00a0 drainage areas within two acres or less.<\/p>\n
This nature-based approach for the check dam demonstration activity is part of the\u00a0 various climate-resilient practices the project is implementing to build capacity for\u00a0 sustainable landscape management as a restoration tool in the context of watershed\u00a0 rehabilitation. In contrast with many engineered solutions, NbS have the potential to\u00a0 tackle both climate mitigation and adaptation challenges at relatively low cost, while\u00a0 delivering multiple additional benefits for people and nature.<\/p>\n
Also present during the training was UNDP Project Coordinator, Ms. Rudo Udika, who\u00a0 indicated that the project intends to continue the implementation of capacity building for\u00a0 Sustainable Land Management and Climate Smart Agriculture activities. Specifically,\u00a0 the GEF\/ UNDP Climate Resilient Agriculture Project will support a combination of\u00a0 activities to reduce deforestation and environmental degradation; reduce soil erosion\u00a0 and improve ground cover and access to sustainable livelihood opportunities. This will\u00a0 seek to augment existing good practices, test new innovative approaches, and develop\u00a0 and support replication of suitable practices.<\/p>\n
The objective of the GEF\/ UNDP Climate Resilient Agriculture Project is to\u00a0 operationalise integrated agroecosystem management through mainstreaming\u00a0 biodiversity conservation in productive landscapes and increasing the resilience of\u00a0 agricultural systems.
