Prime Minister, Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell, has\u00a0 reiterated Grenada\u2019s unwavering commitment to democracy, as he joined world leaders\u00a0 for a Summit for Democracy, hosted by US President, Joe Biden.<\/p>\n
The two-day summit which started on Wednesday is intended to \u201cset forth an affirmative\u00a0 agenda for democratic renewal and to tackle the greatest threats faced by democracies\u00a0 today through collective action.\u201d<\/p>\n
In his intervention at the summit, Dr. Mitchell acknowledged Grenada\u2019s solid record of\u00a0 peaceful transition of power through the democratic process since 1984.<\/p>\n
He also noted that no democracy is safe unless all democracies are protected.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister said, \u201cGrenada acknowledges the interdependent nature of our world\u00a0 and the fundamental importance of maintaining hemispheric stability and ensuring that\u00a0 our Caribbean region remains a zone of peace and bastion for democracy. There are\u00a0 many challenges to keeping democracy sacred, but Grenada is uncompromising in its\u00a0 defence of democratic ideals.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell referenced Government\u2019s focus on a collaborative approach to governance\u00a0 and the social compact established with various stakeholders including the private sector\u00a0 and civil society.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cGrenada promotes the tenets of good governance, accountability, and\u00a0 transparency, the rule of law and its enforcement, consensus-building, equity and\u00a0 inclusiveness. We recognise the rights of every citizen and resident and we uphold the\u00a0 provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other core human rights\u00a0 instruments.\u201d<\/p>\n
As part of the country intervention, world leaders were asked to identify three goals that\u00a0 will be actioned within the coming year, dubbed the \u2018Year of Action\u2019.<\/p>\n
The goals identified by Grenada\u2019s Prime Minister are, \u201cFacilitating greater exposure of\u00a0 young people to parliamentary procedures through the Youth Parliament. Enhancing anti corruption measures through widespread application of a National Gift Registry.\u00a0 Implementing a gender responsive approach to budgeting and a Gender Equality Policy\u00a0 and Action Plan.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
