The executive and members of the Grenada Table Tennis Association (GTTA) are\u00a0 deeply saddened at the passing of former National Men\u2019s Singles Champion and\u00a0 OECS and Caribbean Table Tennis Federation competitor, Everold \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d\u00a0 John from Gouyave, St. John.<\/p>\n
He passed away on Thursday December 16, 2021 at the General Hospital following a\u00a0 period of sickness. The GTTA described John\u2019s passing as a tremendous loss to the\u00a0 sport of table tennis, noting that over the years he was a player, coach and a pillar of\u00a0 strength in table tennis.<\/p>\n
He first competed as a junior in the late 70\u2019s from Gouyave and played competitively\u00a0 for more than four decades winning dozens of competitions.<\/p>\n
John\u2019s collection of table tennis titles included OECS Men\u2019s team doubles and mixed\u00a0 doubles titles, and Grenada\u2019s Anniversary of Independence and National Men\u2019s\u00a0 Singles titles.<\/p>\n
Paying tribute to Everold John, President of the Caribbean Table Tennis Federation,\u00a0 (CRTTF) Teddy Matthew, said the news \u201ccomes as a shock that he is no longer with\u00a0 us. I remember him as an exceptional chopper who once played a remarkable match<\/p>\n
against Cuba\u2019s Raul Bettencourt in the Caribbean Championships. Sad to now hear of\u00a0 his passing.\u201d<\/p>\n
GTTA says Everold \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d John was one of the better players the local\u00a0 game has produced in its more than 50 years of existence.<\/p>\n
Table Tennis players across the state of Grenada have expressed how deeply they will\u00a0 miss this beloved competitor and the humor and great sportsmanship he brought to the\u00a0 sport.<\/p>\n
