Prime Minister, Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell has reiterated\u00a0 his concern about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the nation\u2019s youth.<\/p>\n
In his Independence Day message, Dr. Mitchell stated that children have been the\u00a0 hardest hit by the pandemic, with their lives being unimaginably usurped by the changes\u00a0 made necessary to fight COVID-19.<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell also noted that despite \u201cthe advances in modern technology and the provision\u00a0 of electronic devices by Government to facilitate online learning, there\u2019s really nothing to\u00a0 adequately replace valuable face to face instructional time for young, impressionable\u00a0 minds.\u201d<\/p>\n
In fact, UNESCO has warned of a possible generational catastrophe, given the level of\u00a0 disruption in schooling caused by closures necessitated by the pandemic.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister is also concerned about the pandemic\u2019s impact on socialisation. He\u00a0 said, \u201cIn addition to the significant learning loss, our young boys and girls have been\u00a0 deprived of the social interaction that is so necessary to foster good human relations. We\u00a0 just need to reflect on our own childhood and how we valued meeting our friends at school\u00a0 and participating in various sporting and leisure activities, to immediately understand how\u00a0 much of a disadvantage this pandemic has created for them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Mitchell made an impassioned appeal on behalf of the nation\u2019s youth saying, \u201cToday,\u00a0 I ask that you join me in praying for our young brothers and sisters, that they may recover\u00a0 from this immeasurable loss. Let us also recommit ourselves, as adults, to being more\u00a0 empathetic, rather than judgmental.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister also referenced the impact on youth in his message delivered as part\u00a0 of the flag-raising ceremony at the OECS Commission on the occasion of Grenada\u2019s 48th\u00a0anniversary of independence.<\/p>\n
In that message, Dr. Mitchell, who is the current Chairman of the OECS Authority,\u00a0 encouraged a silent prayer that young people, the leaders of tomorrow, are able to\u00a0 recover from the immense loss they are experiencing.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cI must for a moment focus on the children of the region, who have suffered\u00a0 immeasurably from this pandemic and are likely to continue experiencing its impact many\u00a0 years from now.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
