National Soil Sampling Survey

St. George, Grenada- National Soil Sampling Survey 27th March-14th April, 2023.The Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management Support Office for the Caribbean (PISLM) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, Fisheries and Cooperatives under the CSIDS-SOILCARE Phase 1 project will be conducting a national soil sampling survey. The survey will be conducted island wide inclusive of the sister isle Carriacou from the 27th March to the 14th April, 2023.

The national soil sampling survey falls under component 1 of the 5 component project and will be facilitate in collaboration with the University of the West Indies (UWI, St. Augustine). This survey will provide Grenada with updated soil maps, which will aid in achieving our set Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) targets and goals towards achieving food security. The commemoration of this soil sampling survey is a historic moment for Grenada, as Grenada’s last soil survey was done in 1959 which is 64 years ago.

As the nation embarks on this journey to create history we solicit the support of you our farmers, private land owners and the general public as the team goes into the field to conduct their sampling.Sampling teams will be comprised of UWI delegates, Extension Officers and Ministry of Agriculture support staff GIS Specialist support staff and GSP Focal Point.Training of the Extension Officers was conducted on the 1st and 2nd March 2023. Training team comprised of Land Outlook Consultant Mr. Ronen Francis and the recently trained experts under the project in January at UWI St. Augustine from the Ministry of Agriculture, GIS Specialist Mr. Kenton Fletcher and GSP Focal Point Ms. Allison Haynes.A total of 41 person were trained inclusive of Forestry Department staff.

A total of 150 points will be sampled, with 110 in Grenada and 40 in Carriacou. This island wide survey follows the successful survey of Grenada’s 5 implementation sites.
